Ecstasy - Dynamic Motion Synthesis for the Masses

Ecstasy - Dynamic Motion Synthesis for the Masses

NEW ORLEANS, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent software developer, BrokeAss Games, has announced the release of their new physics/animation toolset, called Ecstasy Motion. Strategically positioned to release the most affordable Dynamic Motion Synthesis solution on the market, the developers will be presenting their software at SIGGRAPH 2009, the annual Graphics and Interactive Techniques conference next week in New Orleans.

Ecstasy blends animated sequences with ragdoll physics and other motor force implementations. The program, set for official release in December 2009, already includes many of the same features seen in top-shelf physics/animation packages, such as batch retargeting and editing, multiple actor support, scriptable events, and a genetic algorithm system that can organically create motion data. Ecstasy also includes features never before seen in a DMS application, such as live motion streaming support, real-time interactive force effects, and native integration into a 3D game environment.

BrokeAss Games has teamed up with NaturalPoint, the makers of Optitrack, a consumer-priced, motion capture system to ensure that Ecstasy supports live motion streaming into a 3D game environment. This led to a new combination of interactive physics and live motion streaming that will be demonstrated in the NaturalPoint/Optitrack booth this year at SIGGRAPH. "The Ecstasy product, for us, plugs a critical hole in the content development pipeline and we're excited to see where they take this technology," says Morgan Jones of NaturalPoint.

Ecstasy was originally designed with video game animators in mind. BrokeAss Games chose Torque3D, by Garage Games, as the development platform for Ecstasy. "Torque3D will basically work with any of the major art tools that are popular in games," according to Brett Seyler of Garage Games. Ecstasy Motion takes full advantage of this flexibility, supporting multiple file formats for easy integration into Poser and 3DStudioMax pipelines. By release, Ecstasy will support BVH, FBX, and COLLADA.

"A variety of rendering effects are available to create scenes containing virtual actors, 3D landscapes, dynamic lighting and weather, as well as structures and ambient props. Ecstasy's real-time rendering system is ideal for digital storyboards or projects targeted at web-distribution," says lead developer, Chris Calef. Ecstasy features chroma key ready outputs which can be easily incorporated into animated film projects without post production.

With independent game developers and animated film makers targeted as the primary user base, Ecstasy promises to deliver high-end functionality at an incredibly low price.

New ABC TV Series 'Defying Gravity' Takes Off With Sony F35 Camera

New ABC TV Series 'Defying Gravity' Takes Off With Sony F35 Camera

PARK RIDGE, N.J., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Capturing the look and feel of life aboard a spacecraft on a six-year mission through the solar system requires imagination, creativity and a flexible camera system. The production team behind the new TV series "Defying Gravity" used all three, including Sony's F35 high-definition camera system.

According to producers for the show, premiering August 2 on the ABC television network, the F35 camera and Sony HDCAM SR(TM) cassettes delivered "a rich, clean quality" and were a perfect match for the heavy amount of visual effects used in many scenes.

"The F35 was the hands-down winner for 'Defying Gravity,'" said executive producer Michael Edelstein. "It had the best image quality and great 35mm depth of field. We had a tremendous amount of visual effects and the F35 is a fantastic digital camera for heavy green screen VFX work."

During pre-production, the team conducted extensive side-by-side comparisons with many competitive high-end digital cameras and found that the dynamic range and color rendition of the F35 was the best choice for the show, according to Edelstein.

"This camera rendered the most attractive flesh tones on our actors, which is an area where most other digital cameras fall short," he said. "The F35 gave us a beautiful 'filmic' look. The shallow depth of field made our actors and sets look fantastic and the variable speed performance gave us a great deal of flexibility to achieve the weightless look of outer space."

The camera's ramping capabilities are notable in several scenes and played a key role in creating very dramatic effects that were used to reveal elements of the characters' backgrounds. For example, one scene shows a main character flashing back to her childhood, standing alone and abandoned in the middle of a train station.

"I started at 3 fps and people are just flying by her," said director of photography Steve McNutt. "Then I pushed the ramp down to 50 fps, and everything just slowed down. It's a wonderful shot and this camera allowed me to pull it off flawlessly."

McNutt previously used Sony's HDW-F900R camera on another space series, "Battlestar Galactica," and found the F35 offered the same familiar interface, with several key improvements, such as the MSU-950 master set-up unit, which can give him access to the camera's key operating and paint parameters.

"Along with lighting techniques, the MSU allowed me to do some basic coloring on the set," he said. "I manipulate the gammas, the knees and the color controls. I will shade the show a bit during principal photography, while always leaving room for even more enhancement during post. I can do that with pretty much any Sony camera. But the F35 gave me an immense latitude and an incredible colorspace. It was difficult for me to push it beyond its limits. It's an outstanding camera."

Sony's HDCAM SR digital videocassettes are designed and co-engineered to fully maximize the benefits of the F35's 4:4:4 RGB recording technology. HDCAM SR recording media uses ultrafine high-performance metal particles 50 percent smaller than those in Sony's HDCAM tape applied in the thinnest magnetic coating, to enable wavelength recording to 0.29um. The result is up to +7dB higher output than HDCAM tape.

"Defying Gravity" is the latest TV series to be shot with Sony's high-end CineAlta(TM) digital cinematography technology, which includes the F23 as well as the F35.

"These systems are designed with the cinematographer's needs in mind," said Rob Willox, director of content creation systems for Sony Electronics. "The combination of high image quality, performance, features and flexibility can add a distinctive style to a production and enhance the producer's vision."

Cindy Cohen of Calabasas, CA Named Winner of TV Land's 'She's Got The Look'

Cindy Cohen of Calabasas, CA Named Winner of TV Land's 'She's Got The Look'

40-Year-Old Wife and Mother - Who Was Once Homeless - Fulfills her Dreams and Lands Contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., a Photo Spread in SELF Magazine and $100,000

LOS ANGELES, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Cindy Cohen of Calabasas, CA was crowned the winner of this season's "She's Got The Look," the TV Land PRIME original reality series which searches for the next great supermodel -- over the age of 35. Cohen was announced the winner on last night's dramatic season finale where she proved "She's Got The Look" in two demanding photo shoots that involved posing in a revealing swimsuit and modeling with live penguins and body paint. During the episode, the three remaining finalists -- Cindy Cohen, Theresa Kalnins and Leeane Locken -- jetted off to Miami for the last two photo shoot challenges of the competition. In a final twist, the models had to walk the runway with professional Wilhelmina models during a live fashion show. Cohen's amazing photos and runway performance swept the judges away and earned her a modeling contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., a photo spread in SELF Magazine, and $100,000.

"Cindy Cohen's path to become the winner of 'She's Got The Look' is a truly inspirational one," states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. "Her beauty, strength and determination made her a clear choice to win it all. She is an inspiration to people in their 40s who are seeking to transform their lives in significant ways."

"Cindy is the epitome of a classic beauty -- she's poised, elegant and gorgeous," said Sean Patterson, President of Wilhelmina Models. "I truly believe that the hardships she has overcome in life have helped her to become the amazing model that she now is. Wilhelmina could not be any more proud to welcome her into our family."

Cindy Cohen, a 40-year-old wife and mother who resides in Calabasas, CA, is now fulfilling her childhood dreams of becoming a model. Her early plans to pursue modeling were postponed after having her son at a young age, struggling to make ends meet and eventually becoming homeless. However, Cindy persevered through her tough times without ever giving up her dreams of being a model and has now proven "She's Got The Look" by taking the competition.

Viewers can go to TVLandPrime.com to see behind-the-scenes footage from Cindy's photo shoot with SELF Magazine as well as blogs and other exciting "She's Got the Look" features.

"She's Got The Look," which is hosted by supermodel Kim Alexis, is a collaboration with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., and sets out to discover a sophisticated, beautiful and confident woman 35 or older destined to become the next "it" girl of the fashion industry. In addition to a contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., and a photo spread in SELF Magazine, this season's winner also receives a check for $100,000. Supermodel Beverly Johnson, who made history as the first African-American model to appear on the cover of American Vogue, celebrity stylist Robert Verdi and Wilhelmina president Sean Patterson are all featured as judges on the series. RoC was the presenting sponsor of "She's Got The Look."

"She's Got The Look" is an Allison Grodner produced exclusively for TV Land. Keith Cox and Sal Maniaci serve as executive producers for TV Land; Sean Patterson and Corey Preston are executive producers from Wilhelmina.

British Music Experience to Host Iconic Michael Jackson Warhol Portrait

British Music Experience to Host Iconic Michael Jackson Warhol Portrait

LONDON, July 31/PRNewswire/ --

- Portrait to be Shown for Three Days Only Before Returning to The States

- With Photo

This Thursday 6th August the British Music Experience, the interactive exhibition of popular music situated within The O2, will display Andy Warhol's (Green) Michael Jackson portrait. The British Music Experience will be the only European venue to host the 1984 portrait before it returns to New York to go under the hammer. For just three days, the piece commissioned to celebrate the world record breaking sales of the King of Pop's Thriller album, will be added to the British Music Experience's collection.

The auction of the portrait will start with an opening bid of $800,000 - the average auction figure reached for a comparable Warhol portrait in recent years is $17 million. In the past the top price for a Warhol picture at auction is $71.7 million for 'Car Crash', and the top price for a Warhol portrait $28 million for 'Lemon Marilyn' - both sold at Christies in New York in 2007.

Paul Lilley, British Music Experience Curator, said: "Michael Jackson's influence on the world of pop is unparalleled. This is a perfect chance for us to give our visitors a once in a life time opportunity before the portrait disappears from the public eye into a private collection."

Janet Lehr, partner at the Vered Gallery, agents for the seller of the Jackson portrait, added: "This Andy Warhol portrait brings together the uncontested King of Pop Art with the uncontested King of Pop. The portrait was painted at the height of their careers and is a celebration of two of the great talents in global cultural history."

The British Music Experience is a combination of cutting edge audio-visual technology and the most coveted music memorabilia of all time, culminating in the creation of one of Britain's most compelling attractions. It enables visitors to trace musical trends through the decades, learn about music's influence on art, fashion and politics and allow visitors to download music from the British Music Experience archive. For the genuine musical experience members of the public can visit the Gibson Interactive Studio, a fully integrated space within the exhibition where they can play various Gibson guitars, Baldwin pianos and Slingerland drums. There is also a full public and educational programme with workshops, lectures, master-classes and concerts.

Back by Popular Demand: Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels Ditch Their Cars for Mackinac Island's 5th Annual Mackinac Island Music Festival

Back by Popular Demand: Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels Ditch Their Cars for Mackinac Island's 5th Annual Mackinac Island Music Festival

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Mackinac Island has been known as a gathering place for centuries, so it is fitting that classical, jazz, folk, country and rock musicians will gather from Tuesday, August 18 through Thursday, August 20, 2009 for the 5th Annual Mackinac Island Music Festival. Presented by Great Turtle Festivals and the Mackinac Arts Council, performances abound around the car-less Island's pubs and historic Mission Point Theatre and include the classic hoedown at picturesque Windermere Point.

Grey Goose presents the unsung hero of Detroit's rock scene, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, on the night of August 19th at Mission Point Resort Theatre. Mitch Ryder is noted for his gruff, wailing singing style, much influenced by rock's icon's Little Richard and James Brown. Rolling Stone Magazine dubs Ryder as "the howling titan of soul and working class party rock ... he's Saturday night in a bottle." Ryder's opening act will be veteran slide guitarist Kraig Kenning from Chicago, who captured first place honors in the National Guitar Slide Festival in North Carolina.

Ash Can Van Gogh featuring Detroit music scene veterans Billy Brandt, JC Whitelaw, Mary McGuire and Nino Dmytryszyn will perform a special reunion show at the Music Festival Hoedown along with blues singer Barbara Payton and northern Michigan songstress Michelle Chenard.

The finale is Mackinac Island's Last Waltz, where festival musicians will come together to pay tribute to Scorsese's rockumentary, the legendary film "The Last Waltz." The film featured The Band with special guests from their career in a farewell gig in 1976. The Forbes Brothers will take on the musical stylings of The Band and festival musicians will portray Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and more to celebrate one of the greatest stage shows of American Roots music in rock history at Mission Point's historic theatre.

About Mackinac Island:

Mackinac Island is a National Historic Landmark located between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas and covers 2,200 acres. The Island banned private motor vehicle use during the last century and today relies on the services of more than 600 horses to provide residents and visitors transportation around the Island.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- When director Sandra Mohr decided to find out why her family's 401(k) was looking more like a 201(k), she probably had no idea she would be exposed to the corrupt underworld of hedge funds, criminal market managers, and greedy legislators. So what's a director to do? Make a movie about it, of course.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090731/LA54820)

She's in good company. Michael Moore, Oliver Stone and Ridley Scott are all working on films about stock market manipulation and Wall Street schemes. But Sandra Mohr's "Stock Shock" is first out of the gate.

The movie exposes a technique known as naked short selling, which has resulted in the collapse of the stock value of some of America's most promising public companies. Sirius XM, often labeled as one of the most manipulated stocks in the market, is dissected in the movie. "Stock Shock" interviews industry experts and Sirius XM investors who saw their stock price hit a high of $9.00/share and then plummet to a horrifying low of 5 cents in 2009.

Investors and fans of the movie claim "Stock Shock" has spurred a grassroots movement, helping convince the SEC to enact and make permanent an emergency rule to ban abusive naked short-selling.

It's no wonder. The reviews are impressive:

"Shocking and eye-opening!" says Jane Velez-Mitchell, Issues on CNN Headline News.

"It's an awakening. Academy Award...'Stock Shock' should get one," says radio host Jim Puplava of the Financial Sense Newshour.

Industry expert and shareholder activist Bud Burrell remarks, "I will give it 10 stars of 10. It is the best doc of this length I have ever seen. I think this will go into the defining literature of this space."

"Stock Shock-The Movie" is available on DVD at www.stockshockmovie.com and other online merchants.

Television Company Belo Corp. (BLC) Reports Results for Second Quarter 2009

Television Company Belo Corp. (BLC) Reports Results for Second Quarter 2009

Company also to restate prior years' financials for non-cash impairment charges

DALLAS, July 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE:BLC) , one of the nation's largest pure-play, publicly-traded television companies, today reported net earnings per share of $0.10 in the second quarter of 2009, in line with analysts' estimates, compared to net earnings per share of $0.25 in the second quarter of 2008.

Dunia A. Shive, Belo's president and Chief Executive Officer, said, "The Company's second quarter total revenue decline of 23 percent was very similar to the decline experienced in the first quarter as the soft advertising environment continued, especially in the Company's larger markets. However, we did see an uptick in sales activity in June that has also carried into July.

"Excluding spin-off related charges in the second quarter of 2008 and non-cash pension expense, Belo's previously announced cost-saving measures led to a reduction in combined station and corporate operating costs of 13 percent in the second quarter of 2009."

The Company also announced the restatement of its audited fiscal 2007 and 2008 financial statements and unaudited first quarter 2009 balance sheet due to a misapplication of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 142 "Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets" ("FAS 142") under GAAP. These adjustments are non-cash, do not affect Belo's liquidity or debt covenants, and do not impact the Company's future operations. More detailed information on this matter is included below.

Second Quarter in Review Operating Results

Total revenues decreased 23 percent in the second quarter of 2009 versus the second quarter of 2008. Total spot revenue, including political, was down 28 percent with 27 percent and 29 percent decreases in local and national spot, respectively. Second quarter 2009 revenues were affected by the soft advertising environment, particularly in the automotive category which was down 53 percent compared to the second quarter of 2008. Political revenues in the second quarter of 2009 were $1.8 million lower than the second quarter of 2008.

Advertising revenue associated with Belo's Web sites decreased 5.1 percent to $7.1 million in the second quarter of 2009, representing almost 5 percent of Belo's total revenue. Retransmission revenue totaled $11.4 million in the second quarter of 2009 and represents almost 8 percent of the Company's total revenue. The Company expects to achieve approximately $41 million in full year 2009 retransmission revenue.

Total station expenses decreased 12 percent in the second quarter of 2009 versus the same period last year due primarily to the continued implementation of cost-saving measures.

Station EBITDA in the second quarter of 2009 was down 39 percent versus the prior year. The station EBITDA margin for the second quarter of 2009 was 35 percent compared to 43 percent in the second quarter of 2008.

Corporate

Corporate operating costs were $5.2 million in the second quarter of 2009 compared to $6.6 million in the second quarter of 2008, a decrease of 21 percent due to an insurance reimbursement and cost-saving measures.

Other Items

Belo's depreciation and amortization expense decreased 3.5 percent to $10 million in the second quarter of 2009, down from $10.3 million in the second quarter of 2008.

Interest expense decreased $6.2 million, or 29 percent, in the second quarter of 2009.

Other income, net, decreased $3.6 million in the second quarter of 2009 due primarily to the write-off of certain analog equipment following the digital television transition in June.

Income tax expense decreased $10.8 million in the second quarter of 2009 due primarily to lower pre-tax earnings.

Total debt at June 30, 2009 was $1.069 billion, a reduction of $23 million from December 31, 2008. The Company's leverage and interest coverage ratios, as defined in the Company's credit facility, were 5.3 and 3.0 times, respectively, at June 30, 2009. The Company invested $1.7 million in capital expenditures in the second quarter of 2009, down from $9.8 million in the second quarter of 2008.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures

A reconciliation of station EBITDA to earnings from operations, a reconciliation of cash operating costs and expenses before spin-off related costs and pension expense to total operating costs and expenses, and a reconciliation of net earnings from continuing operations to pro forma net earnings from continuing operations, are set forth in an exhibit to this release.

Restatement of Prior Period Financial Statements

During the Company's quarterly review of goodwill and other intangible assets under FAS 142, a misapplication of GAAP was detected in how the Company calculates the carrying value of its FCC licenses for purposes of assessing impairments. The Company had been deducting deferred taxes associated with its FCC licenses to arrive at the carrying value for these intangible assets. Under GAAP, the deferred taxes associated with FCC licenses should not have been deducted when calculating the carrying value. As a result, the Company is restating its audited fiscal 2007 and 2008 financial statements and its unaudited first quarter 2009 balance sheet.

The adjustment to 2007 net earnings from continuing operations is a non-cash increase of $12.8 million, or $0.12 per share. The adjustment to 2008 net earnings from continuing operations is a non-cash charge of $126 million, or $1.21 per share. The total of goodwill and intangible assets on the Company's balance sheets will be increased by $7.8 million at December 31, 2007 and reduced by $197 million at December 31, 2008 and March 31, 2009.

Additional information regarding this matter and the restated fiscal 2007 and 2008 financial statements and first quarter 2009 balance sheet will be provided in an amended Form 10-K for the year ended 2008, an amended Form 10-Q for the period ended March 31, 2009, and a current report on Form 8-K, all scheduled for SEC filing on or before August 10, 2009.

Outlook

"Looking at third quarter," Shive said, "visibility is limited due to later booking of spot advertising and uncertainty surrounding the timing of automotive spending from GM and Chrysler. However, the combined local and national spot percentage decline in June was better than May, and July will be better than June. Current pacings indicate that the third quarter combined local and national spot percentage decline will improve from second quarter. Excluding spin-off related charges in 2008, full year 2009 combined station and corporate operating costs are expected to be 12 percent lower than 2008, an improvement from previous guidance."

A conference call to discuss this earnings release and other matters of interest to shareholders and analysts will follow at 1:00 p.m. CDT this afternoon. The conference call will be simultaneously Webcast on the Company's Web site (www.belo.com/invest). Following the conclusion of the Webcast, a replay of the conference call will be archived on Belo's Web site. To access the listen-only conference lines, dial 1-800-230-1059. Station EBITDA represents the Company's earnings from operations before interest expense, income taxes, depreciation, amortization, corporate expense and spin-off related operating costs. Other income (expense), net is not allocated to television station earnings from operations because it consists primarily of equity in earnings (losses) from investments in partnerships and joint ventures and other non-operating income (expense).
