Military Channel to Broadcast Army's Best Ranger Competition

-- Special Filmed During Army Competition in April- Highlights Include a Father & Son Team --

SILVER SPRING, Md., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Military Channel takes viewers behind the scenes of one of the world's most grueling physical competitions- the U.S. Army's Best Ranger Competition. The Best Ranger Competition showcases the incredible physical and mental endurance of elite real-life warriors and world-class athletes. While described by many as the Army Olympics, the competition goes beyond a sporting event by demonstrating relevant training for combat. Military Channel premieres the one-hour special BEST RANGER 2007 on Sunday, June 17, at 10 PM (ET).

The Best Ranger Competition, established in 1982, is held each year at Fort Benning, Ga., home of the United States Army Ranger Training Brigade and headquarters of the 75th Ranger Regiment. This special follows two-man teams of Rangers competing in a variety of realistic and gritty exercises, vying for the title of Best Ranger Team 2007.

Many of the soldiers involved in the Best Ranger Competition have just returned from a tour in either Iraq or Afghanistan. This competition highlights every aspect of what Rangers, whether deployed or in training, should embody: physical and mental stamina, competitiveness and confidence in the face of all obstacles.

Among those competing are two former champions, a father and son team, and many soldiers who have served in the global war on terrorism. There are at least three teams that have come close to winning in past competitions, and they are vying to clinch the win this time. This is also one of the largest fields of competitors the competition has seen, with 39 two-man teams.

"Team Greenway," Staff Sgt. Brandon Greenway and his father, Command Sergeant Major Douglas M. Greenway, was a sentimental favorite, as the competition punctuated the senior Greenway's military retirement.

The Rangers are active-duty military personnel who can be called to war at any moment. Army Rangers are the best of the best the Army has to offer. The Best Ranger Competition challenges these highly skilled and accomplished Rangers-competing as two-man teams-in events that test their physical conditioning, Ranger skills and team strategies.

The 2007 Best Ranger Competition was performed in a total of 16 endurance events over a course of 60 hours that reflected the essential physical, intellectual and strategic elements of Ranger training. The events are purposely scheduled back-to-back and around the clock for 60 hours, allowing little time for rest or meals. The events range from the Malvesti Obstacle Course, where Rangers endure both physical and mental challenges, to a Push Up/Chin Up challenge, to the Bayonet Course and to end the competition, the two-mile Buddy Run.

Of the 39 teams that started this year's competition, only 21 finished. On April 23, the winners were presented with their coveted trophy and engraved 9 mm Beretta pistols. The winners of the 2007 Best Ranger Competition are:

1st Place Team Major Liam Collins/36 and Master Sergeant Walt Zajkowski/34. They represent the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Ft. Bragg, N.C. The two have competed eights times between the two of them. 2nd Place Team Captain Andrew Farina/27 and Captain David Uthlaut/27. They are first- time competitors representing the 25th Infantry Division, Hawaii. 3rd Place Team Sergeant First Class Billy Pouliot/30 and Sergeant First Class Adam Nash/30. They represent the 75th Ranger Regiment. Nash won the Best Ranger Competition in 2004.
