RAMBO Sells Two Million DVD Units In The United States and Canada During First Week
SANTA MONICA, Calif. and VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- One of the silver screen's most legendary characters returned with a bang as John Rambo proved he is still a force in today's digital age. The home entertainment debut of RAMBO from Lionsgate(R) (NYSE:LGF) , the leading next generation major studio, left a wake of destruction in its path as the franchise proved dominant across all revenue channels including DVD, Blu-ray, the iTunes Store (www.itunes.com) and iTunes Digital Copy.
The RAMBO DVD debuted at number one on the home video rental charts and was number two on the sales charts among this week's DVD releases. The non- stop, action-packed thrill ride finished the week with two million units sold. Additionally, the Blu-ray release of RAMBO debuted at number one as it marked one of the best Blu-ray debuts to date. Packaged media was not the only place where Rambo still packs a punch. The release, which earned over $100 million worldwide during its theatrical run, came out of its first weekend as the number one movie download on the iTunes Store. Lionsgate also released Rambo: The Complete Collector's Set, a special collectible DVD set containing all four films and a bonus disc of special features as well as the Rambo: I-III Blu-Ray Box Set on May 27th.
"John Rambo is as explosive on home entertainment as he is in the Burmese jungle. The Rambo franchise continues to be strong during the digital age because it appeals to a very fervent fan base that receives its entertainment in many different formats from packaged media to all other digital options," said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate General Manager and Executive Vice President. "The Rambo series has been a jewel of the Lionsgate library and this new installment to the franchise is an action-packed movie that has obviously thrilled old and new Rambo fans alike."
Lionsgate remains at the cutting edge of adopting new digital technologies for its current releases and its vast filmed entertainment library and supports technologies designed to foster the adoption, efficiency and quality of digital downloads throughout the motion picture and television marketplace. This is highlighted by its recent deal with Apple to provide Digital Copy for iTunes customers who purchase select DVDs with an additional iTunes Digital Copy of the movie.
The Rambo: 2-Disc Special Edition and Rambo: 2-Disc Blu-Ray are among the first to take advantage of the groundbreaking deal with Apple. Both products are packaged with a standard-definition digital copy of the feature film for iTunes and Windows Media, providing a consumer-friendly way to transfer the feature film from a DVD to iTunes that can then be viewed on a PC or Mac(R), iPod(R) with video, iPhoneT or on Apple TV(R).
SYNOPSIS/EXTRA FEATURES
Starring Academy Award(R) nominee Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), who also co- wrote and directed the film, this latest installment of the hit franchise finds our hero John Rambo on a mission to save a group of Christian aid workers who have been kidnapped by Burmese soldiers.
