'Real' Robin Williams Featured at 20th Anniversary Rededication of Memorial

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The "real" Robin Williams and Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Ronald D. Castille will highlight a weekend observance of the 20th anniversary of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Front and Spruce streets.

Adrian Cronauer, upon whom the Robin Williams character in "Good Morning Vietnam" is based, will appear during a special free showing of the film Friday, October 26, at 9 p.m. at the Independence Seaport Museum. The event follows a candlelight ceremony at the Memorial at 7:30 p.m.

Keynote speaker at a rededication ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, will be Justice Castille, who was instrumental in the effort to get the Memorial built in 1987. The event follows a noon POW/MIA Remembrance ceremony at the Memorial.

The Memorial is observing its 20-year anniversary this weekend. The Memorial was constructed with an extensive grass roots effort and the original dedication followed the "Last Patrol" walk by 10 veterans from Washington, DC, to Philadelphia in May 1987 to bring from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial tracings of the names of the Philadelphians killed in the war.

The ceremony is being held by the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Advisory Fund (PVVMAF), the nonprofit organization working with the Fairmount Park in providing oversight to the Memorial. The PVVMAF has launched a "Duty to Remember" Campaign to raise $2 million for the restoration and preservation of the aging Memorial, which has deteriorated with time the weather, as well as man-made damage, such as by skateboarders. Also under consideration is a design concept to change the layout of the Memorial to improve security and visibility.
