Independent documentary film Torn from the Flag, about the fall of communism and the significant global effects of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, is 4 weeks from its World Premiere at the AFI Film Fest

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent filmmaker Klaudia Kovacs, in collaboration with Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, and multi-award-winning cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs, ASC, has made a sociopolitical historical film about the fall of communism in relation to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Ms. Kovacs' feature-length documentary Torn from the Flag presents events in Hungary against the backdrop of international geopolitics and the rivalry between superpowers. The film juxtaposes the struggle for freedom of the individual against the impersonal decisions of world politics.

The late Hollywood legend Laszlo Kovacs was the principal cinematographer, and this was his last film. It includes current and 1956 archive footage by both Mr. Kovacs and Zsigmond.

Regarded as a moral victory, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution was a pivotal catalyst for the advancement of democracy and is often viewed as having set an example for other nations to follow. The uprising, the reprisals and repression, and the exodus to the West had an immediate impact on the communist movement worldwide and foreshadowed the Soviet system's demise.

The documentary presents, in person or in archives, a broad range of viewpoints: Freedom Fighters, Soviet soldiers, foreign students, former political prisoners, torturers, historians, and political notables such as European Parliament member Otto von Habsburg, heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire; Gorbachev; Reagan; and controversial Cold War figure Henry Kissinger.

Torn from the Flag portrays the courage and triumph of the human spirit under sociopolitically oppressive conditions, and is as relevant today as half a century ago.

Ms. Kovacs immigrated to the US from Hungary at 18. Over more than a decade, she has gained a broad background in the entertainment field: she is an award-winning actress, has produced stage plays and short films, and co-founded two production companies specializing in documentaries and educational films. Ms. Kovacs faced significant hurdles in completing Torn from the Flag, including the death of one main character; hence it took her 9 years to complete it. It is her directorial debut, as well as her first feature as a producer and writer.

Torn from the Flag is a film by Klaudia Kovacs, made in association with Zsigmond and Mr. Kovacs. Ms. Kovacs produced the film. She wrote the story; the screenplay was written by Endre Hules. Hules and Ms. Kovacs directed. The director of photography was Laszlo Kovacs; Zoltan Honti was the other cinematographer. George Adams was Associate Producer; Stephanie Hubbard, Editor; Kinga Toth, Production Associate; original music was composed by Chris Horvath.

The film was shot with Panavision's Sony 900 HD camera; post-production was completed with the assistance of Technicolor. Torn from the Flag is intended for international theatrical release and television distribution.
