Story Summary: The Greatest Race on Earth 2007 - 2008 aims to highlight the need for environmental responsibility on global scale

LONDON, Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Standard Chartered Bank has announced the launch of the fourth series of The Greatest Race on Earth (GROE) with an exciting new competition called the 'Environment Challenge - Race for a Living Planet' for nations to win a share of US$1 million for environmental conservation projects in their country.

The Environment Challenge is a significant addition to the forthcoming Greatest Race on Earth (GROE) series. Standard Chartered has initiated the 'Environment Challenge' to promote global awareness of environmental issues. Standard Chartered Bank has partnered with WWF UK (formally World Wildlife Fund) donating the US$1 million to WWF UK to support vital environmental conservation projects which will benefit the three nations that attract the highest number of environmental pledges per capita. The results will be announced at an award ceremony following the last race in Hong Kong on Monday 18th February 2008.

Peter Sands, Group Chief Executive Standard Chartered said "The idea of the environment challenge is actually very simple. We're asking people to support their national teams running in The Greatest Race on Earth by making a pledge, or pledges, about simple ways in which they can change their everyday behaviour to have a better impact on the environment. And those national teams that attract the most pledges from individuals will benefit from a million dollar donation that Standard Chartered is making available."

The Environment Challenge encourages the public to select and undertake up to eight pledges listed on http://www.thegreatestrace.com/ and nominate which GROE National team they wish their pledges to go to. The pledges are easy to make, do not cost any money for example; turning out the lights when you leave the room and not leaving the tap running when cleaning your teeth. The three nations that attract the highest number of environmental pledges, per capita, as recorded through http://www.thegreatestrace.com/ wins. (The eight pledges are listed below).

Dax Lovegrove, Head of Business and Industry Relations, WWF UK commented: "I think this project can really raise awareness of the environmental challenge that we all face. And if we can encourage as many people as possible to recycle more, to save water, to save energy, all those kinds of things that really need to be done, then that's going to be a huge benefit to society and the planet, and to this partnership."

Standard Chartered Bank sees the Environment Challenge as part of its global environmental and sustainability strategy. The Bank has sought to strengthen its leadership stance across Asia, Africa and the Middle East by helping to raise awareness of the simple steps people can make to help reduce the long term effects of climate change, water and air pollution as well as land abuse and deforestation.

The Greatest Race on Earth (GROE), coined 'The World Cup of Marathons' already attracts over 50 teams from over 30 different Nations who compete for a share of a prize pool of over one million dollars for the quickest aggregate team time over the four challenging marathons.
