Forty-Three Percent of Workers Called in Sick With Fake Excuses in the Last 12 Months, CareerBuilder.com's Annual Survey Finds

CareerBuilder.com's annual survey of absenteeism at the office revealed an increase in the number of workers who have called in sick with bogus excuses. According to "Out of the Office 2005," forty-three percent of workers said they called in sick when they felt well at least once during the last year, up from 35 percent in the 2004 survey. The survey also revealed that some hiring managers were less tolerant of workers playing hooky with 23 percent stating they had fired an employee for missing work without a legitimate reason.

Passing the Buck: Survey Reveals Most Workers Wouldn't Want to Be Boss

Managers who worry their employees are angling for their position can rest easy. In a recent survey, 71 percent of workers said they would rather not take the helm. That could be because 63 percent of respondents felt they could not do a better job than their supervisor. The survey was developed by OfficeTeam to coincide with National Boss Day, October 16. Workers were asked, "Would you like to have your manager's job?" Their responses:

No 71 percent Yes 26 percent Don't know 3 percent

Those polled also were asked, "Do you think you could do a better job than your boss?" Their responses:

No 63 percent Yes 30 percent Don't know 6 percent Refused 1 percent
