Author Dan Verton Discusses His New Book and the Risks Insider Threats Pose to the Security of Corporate America on Two Radio Shows
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sep. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Dan Verton, author and award-winning journalist, was recently featured on National Public Radio (NPR) and Network Computing's security Podcast to discuss his latest book, The Insider: A True Story. The book, published by Llumina Press, provides deep insight into the threats that trusted employees can pose to the security of personal and corporate data, and the damage that can be caused when these threats are ignored. You can tune into these interviews by logging onto: http://www.wamu.org/audio/kn/05/08/k1050809-8119.ram (NPR) and http://i.cmpnet.com/networkcomputing/blogs/podcasts/NWC_Security_Podcast_18.mp 3 (Network Computing)
"Contrary to what many believe, the security perimeter is dead because proprietary information is leaking from the inside out," says Verton. "While some incidents are the result of insiders motivated by financial gain or revenge, my research found that the data breaches taking place in today's corporations are not always malicious. Even the most trusted employees can accidentally leak sensitive and confidential data over the network through Webmail, IM, SMTP email, peer-to-peer file sharing, and more."
The Insider: A True Story was based largely on research and hard data collected from Reconnex Corporation, whose enterprise risk management technology is used to perform 48-Hour e-Risk Rapid Assessments that provide a complete view of enterprise risk by monitoring all traffic flowing over a corporate network, regardless of file type or communication channel. In Reconnex's recent studies, these assessments confirmed that corporate (SMTP- based) email accounts for less than 10 percent of network traffic, with most communications taking place via Web-based protocols such as Webmail and Instant Messaging.
Upcoming Speaking Engagements:
Verton will be speaking at the Internet Security Systems' Summer Seminar Series "Best Practices for Safeguarding Customer Data" panel on November 9th in Chicago, Illinois and November 10th in Long Beach, California.
