Why: A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that is caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with an "impulsive" force transmitted to the head. A concussion can cause immediate but temporary impairment of brain functions, such as thinking, vision, equilibrium and consciousness. After a person has had a concussion, he or she is at increased risk for recurrence. Moreover, after a person has several concussions, less of a blow can cause injury, and the person can require more time to recover.
Concussion symptoms and recovery time are unique. It is important to educate patients that when seeking a healthcare provider to diagnose or treat a concussion, physical therapy is an important part of recovery. A supervised plan of care can be put into place to increase physical and mental activity without provoking or causing an increase in symptoms. NovaCare Rehabilitation's trained experts perform post-concussion testing, interpret results and communicate with a physician to coordinate a safe return to activity. Our comprehensive concussion management program includes:
-- Vestibular / Balance / Ocular Motor Rehabilitation
-- Vision and coordination testing help to assess deficits and impact on
daily functioning
-- Orthopaedic evaluation of neck, as well as contributing factors that may
be causing headaches
-- Return-to-activity program is initiated once patient is symptom-free to
ensure full safety before returning to sport or activity
-- Baseline Testing
