Gomez Family Food Drive - Trying to Make a Difference: Politics and National Food Drive

Gomez Family Food Drive - Trying to Make a Difference: Politics and National Food Drive

PHOENIX, April 2, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- It's rare to read about teens, especially teen actors, that are actually trying to make a difference. Well, here is one family that is putting their time and money where their mouth is!

Hunter Gomez, 16, is known as much for his charity and political donations as for his acting. He was highly publicized last year for donating $2300 dollars to John McCain's Presidential campaign at the young age of 15, three years under the legal voting age. Gomez, a film actor, got his start in National Treasure with Nicholas Cage, and is best known on TV for his work on FOX's The Family Guy. From a young age the Gomez parents encouraged their children to get involved in community service efforts and politics. Hunter's parents and siblings Ashley, 20, and Krystle, 22, each donated $2300 to the campaign. His siblings Austin, 19, Tiffany, 25, and brother-in-law Andrew, 24, also donated several hundred dollars to the campaign. The Gomez Family has raised about $50,000 for McCain and continue in their efforts.

The Gomez Family organized a national food drive, spearheaded by Ashley and Hunter. The Gomez Family Food Drive in 2006-2007 raised 100,000 cans of food and gave out over $5,300 in donations to schools and organization across the country that raised food. Local businessman Joe Riley of National Auto Mart donated $2,500 to the food drive so the amount of donations could be doubled! The Second Annual Gomez Family Food drive for 2007-2008 just ended. The school that collected the most food was Desert Ridge Junior High School in Arizona. They raised 27,500 cans and received a $1,500 dollar donation from the family.

In the last two years the Gomez Family has raised 132,012 pounds of food and has given $8,950 dollars cash to schools and youth groups.

Dr. Ernesto and Linda Gomez were named 2006 Arizona Parents of the Year and 2007 National Parents of the Year by the National Parents Day Committee. Hunter is starting to film a new movie, The Last Ounce of Courage, this April in Kansas City, in which he will donate a portion of his pay to charity, as he always does. Ashley continues her singing career and is starting law school in August at the age of 20. Ashley plans to use her law degree to start NGOs in third-world countries. Austin is starting at Arizona State University and plans to continue on to medical school. Krystle is in her second year at UPenn Law School and has just accepted a job for the summer at one of the most prestigious law firms in Manhattan. Tiffany is graduating this semester with her Masters in Pastoral Ministries and her husband Andrew is getting his MBA from Stanford.
