Seats on Virgin America's JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO Inaugural Flights Auctioned for Charity

Who: Virgin America (virginamerica.com), a new U.S. start-up airline, is ready to take to the skies on August 8th with a star-studded cast for its JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO inaugural flights. Sir Richard Branson, Fred Reid - Virgin America CEO, Stephen Colbert, Cold War Kids and celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson will help get the party started at events in New York, LA and San Francisco.

-- Virgin America is a 'next generation' low-fare airline with innovative features aimed at bringing a little fun back to flying, including: the most advanced inflight entertainment system in the U.S. skies (25 movies, 18 channels of satellite TV, videogames, music, onboard chat and the ability to order food when you want it); plush leather seats; mood lighting; mini-bars; and massage chairs in first class. -- KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) is a national network of free, open-enrollment, public schools in under-resourced communities throughout the United States. There are currently 57 locally run KIPP schools serving over 14,000 students. More than 80 percent of KIPP students are low-income. Nationally, nearly 80 percent of KIPP alumni have matriculated to college.

What: To kick off the New York launch, Fred Reid will be joined by Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson, as well as the inimitable Stephen Colbert who is slated to christen a brand new Virgin America plane in his own honor. Special guests will then board the plane to take the party to the left coast. Meanwhile, in LA, celebrity DJ, Samantha Ronson will spin records while studio entertainment partners, celebrities and friends "walk the red carpet" at Virgin America's LAX premier. Both flights will land at the San Francisco International Airport at approximately 1:10 pm and will be greeted by a hometown reception. Guests will then go to the launch party at Ruby Skye, where indie rock sensation Cold War Kids will headline.

Why/How: To help disadvantaged kids get the education they deserve. A pair of tickets on each of Virgin America's JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO inaugural flights*, as well as hotel accommodations and VIP tickets for the launch party, will be auctioned off to support SF-based KIPP. (*This service is subject to receipt of government authority.)

* Although the Department of Transportation has specifically authorized Virgin America to sell tickets, the airline is still awaiting final, effective authority from the Department. We fully anticipate this to occur prior to August 8th, the date of our first scheduled flights. To protect you during this interim period, Virgin America will place your payment in escrow until we receive final sign off from the Department. In addition, we have agreed with the Department that you can cancel your ticket and receive a full refund at any time before we start operations, and we will arrange alternative transportation or arrange for a refund of 200% of the amount you have paid for your ticket to ensure that you will not be inconvenienced, in the unlikely event that there is any delay in the start up of Virgin America's services.
