Chicago Sports Great Jack Quinlan Subject of New Audio Book
Jack Quinlan / Forgotten Greatness
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- A baseball broadcaster considered by many to have been the best who ever called a game is the subject of "JACK QUINLAN / FORGOTTEN GREATNESS", a CD-ROM audio book that pays homage to the Chicagoland sports great. The project was a labor of love for baseball fan and veteran newsman Ron Barber.
"Jack Quinlan was, arguably, the finest play-by-play baseball broadcaster ever," said Barber, a Chicago native who grew up listening to the Cubs from his Glenview home. Quinlan announced Cubs games in the 1950's and early 1960's until a fatal auto accident ended his life during spring training when he was only 38.
"His superb career and brilliant work were cut short," Barber continues, "and I believe the book will let those of us who grew up listening to him on WGN Radio relive that work. And better yet, it will allow younger sports fans to learn about and get to know this legendary sportsman."
In addition to producing the audio book, Barber has actively pushed for Quinlan to be recognized with the Ford C. Frick Award bestowed annually for the best baseball broadcaster. Frick winners are honored at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY during the Hall of Fame weekend.
The two-hour, two CD set features anecdotes, baseball history, great stories, many of the remaining clips of Quinlan's work, and numerous interviews with some of the top names in sports and sports broadcasting, as well as Barber's narrative. "It will be a fun ride for any baseball fan," Barber said.
Proceeds from the sale of the audio book will be donated to two charities, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and Humane Society's efforts to help the animals left orphaned by Hurricane Katrina.
Chicago native Ron Barber has successfully been a reporter and anchorman on both TV and Radio. He has worked with such sports personalities as Jack Buck, Bob Costas, and Dan Dierdorf. He is currently producing a new audio book about legendary KMOX Radio personality Jack Carney.
