This special presentation follows the development of Hurricane Katrina from August 25-29, tracking it from before it crossed Florida to the day after its deadly and destructive landfall on the central Gulf Coast. The program features segments of live coverage presented by meteorologists from The Weather Channel along with video of the storm and aftermath, some of which has never aired on the network.
Separately, The Weather Channel wrapped up a multi-year TVN VOD services agreement, marking their first VOD offering to date. The programming will be anchored by the signature "Storm Stories" series, a program long popular with viewers of The Weather Channel. Timing of the deal and public interest in the story prompted the companies to collaborate on the Hurricane Katrina special.
"TVN jumped into action to help us connect with viewers on this landmark weather event affecting families across a wide area of the country," said Lisa Shankle, Vice President of On Demand Television Services at The Weather Channel. "When catastrophic events like Hurricane Katrina take place, television viewers trust The Weather Channel to provide in-depth information, and now that information is available On Demand as well."
"The Weather Channel is the leader in covering weather-related events like Katrina," said Matt Cohen, VP of Business Development, TVN Entertainment. "Based on our widely-deployed VOD platform, we are lending our resources to the efforts of The Weather Channel to provide timely information on this devastating hurricane."
