SCO Sponsors Route 66 Challenge Fundraiser For Innovative Youth Music and Mentoring Program
Providing Transportation and Innovative Mobile Technologies for One-of-a-Kind Fund Raising Road Trip in support of JazzMasters Workshop National Non-profit Program
LINDON, Utah and CARMEL VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- . The SCO Group, Inc. ("SCO") (NASDAQ:SCOX), a leading provider of UNIX(R) software technology for distributed, embedded and network-based systems, today announced its corporate sponsorship of the JazzMasters Workshop (JMW) Route 66 Challenge (http://www.jazzmastersworkshop.org/). As a participating sponsor, SCO will provide transportation and Me Inc. mobile technologies to award-winning jazz guitarist, Bruce Forman, and his Cow Bop western swing band as they tour the country raising money and awareness for the youth music mentoring program.
Beginning October 6, 2005, Bruce Forman and his band will travel almost 2,500 miles across the United States on a 15-day music road tour, visiting local schools and community centers to demonstrate firsthand how music can transform lives. As a modern, forward-thinking organization, Forman and his band will use the latest technologies-including SCO's Me Inc. mobile communications platform-to reach out to individuals and communities across the country.
Me Inc. is an advanced networking platform designed to run on smart phones and Web browsers. This innovative new technology from SCO takes a totally new approach to mobile communication, coordination and control with greater ease of use and at a much lower cost.
"Providing Me Inc. digital services to the JazzMasters Workshop is a prime example of using innovative technologies in a new way-delivering enhanced levels of communication and interaction to individuals and communities," said Darl McBride, president and CEO of The SCO Group. "Me Inc. enables Rich Mobility at very low cost. It empowers individuals and communities to communicate more easily and act more responsively. Me Inc. Shout will help JazzMasters Workshop get their worthy message out to communities around the world with intimacy, impact, and economy. We are especially proud of this great application of our technology."
As part of the Route 66 Challenge, SCO will equip Forman and his band with smart phones equipped with SCO's recently released Me Inc. Rich Mobility software, featuring the Shout digital service. This innovative digital service from SCO provides a quick and easy way to send voice and text messages to large numbers of people without the need for complex phone-based contact lists. With Shout, Forman and the band will be able to communicate with fans, friends and family continuously throughout the tour. The traveling group will also use the camera-equipped smart phones to share the sights as well as the sounds from the performances and workshops.
"We'd like to thank The SCO Group for being our first corporate sponsor," said Bruce Forman, founder and executive director of JazzMasters Workshop. "We're excited to use SCO's new Me Inc. technology during our tour to bring us closer together with JazzMasters Workshop community of supporters and friends."
In addition to SCO's Me Inc. digital services, Forman and his band will leverage other technologies in support of the Route 66 Challenge, including an online pledge drive and an unusual series of eBay auctions. On eBay, JMW will offer auctions for the opportunity to ride "shotgun" with the band on different segments of the venerable highway. Bid winners who are also musicians will be invited to play in the band, as well. The segments include Chicago to St. Louis (#6564694287, October 6-10), St. Louis to Tulsa (#6564697899, October 10-13), Tulsa to Albuquerque (#6564699642, October 13- 17), and Santa Fe to Los Angeles (#6564701331 October 17-21). Performance schedules can be found at www.wayoutwestmusic.com.
JazzMasters Workshop, a national non-profit organization, was founded in 2000 by celebrated jazz guitarist and educator Bruce Forman, who won recent acclaim for his contribution to the music in Clint Eastwood's Academy Award(R) winning film, Million Dollar Baby. JMW was created to help youth reach their potential through music education and teamwork. Through JMW's no-charge programs, children of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can experience a powerful connection with gifted musicians-enjoying hands-on mentoring sessions and performance workshops.
All proceeds donated to the JMW Route 66 Challenge will go to support and grow JMW's weekly workshops and community events across America. The Route 66 Challenge fundraiser is accepting donations by mail or web and all money pledged will go to support ongoing JMW programs-enabling many more young lives to be touched and changed by the power of music.
