Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D lands in IMAX(R) Theatres to Widespread Acclaim

Critics and Moviegoers Laud Playtone Productions' First IMAX(R) 3D Film

NEW YORK, Sept. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IMAX Corporation (NASDAQ: IMAX; TSX: IMX) today announced that Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D, a Playtone/IMAX production, presented and narrated by Tom Hanks, opened to stellar critical reviews and audience acclaim around the globe this past weekend. The film grossed $550,000 in 82 worldwide IMAX(R) theatres over the three-day period from Friday, September 23 - Sunday, September 25. Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D is scheduled to rollout across the globe in the coming weeks, with a total of approximately 120 IMAX screens already confirmed to play the film before the end of the year.

"We are very pleased with the tremendous praise this film has received and excited to hear how people are being moved by the experience of walking on the moon in IMAX(R) 3D," said IMAX co-Chairmen and co-CEO's Richard Gelfond and Bradley Wechsler. "A majority of the world's population wasn't even born when the last person walked on the moon, and we're proud to offer this film as a way to share the wonder of that era - and the magnitude of those events - with our children and the young people of today. We're confident this inspiring film will continue to play and be enjoyed throughout the IMAX network for many years to come."

Added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, "We believe this film is another strong addition to IMAX's celebrated library of space films that play successfully year after year, such as 2002's Space Station 3D, which has grossed nearly $90 million to date - including $45 million in its second and third year of release."

Reviews of the film were virtually unanimous in their praise of the groundbreaking movie. The Los Angeles Times raved, "More of a joy ride than a documentary, Tom Hanks' Magnificent Desolation is excellent," and that "it's the film's visuals that provide its biggest thrills as director (Mark) Cowen places the audience squarely in the boots of Apollo astronauts as they walk the moon's pockmarked surface." The Washington Post advanced that, "The next best thing to going to the moon? Rocketing up there on the IMAX screen," with The Seattle Times echoing the sentiment: "Offers the most realistic approximation of a moon visit that Earthbound mortals have ever seen." The New York Post said, "Adults will be more than passably entertained by this short, patriotic feature, and kids will be entranced." The Indianapolis Star called the film a "Magnificent 3-D movie triumph," and that it "offers a true 'you are there' feel." The Kansas City Star said, "The film is fascinating history and unabashedly inspirational, and the (IMAX) 3-D technology with which it's being shown is about as good as it gets."
