Text Messaging to Support End to African Poverty: Sun Microsystems Partners with Live 8 Concert Organizers to Power SMS Campaign During Philadelphia Show

MENLO PARK, July 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) has joined together with Live 8 concert organizers to power a text messaging campaign during the July 2 Live 8 Philadelphia concert to gain support for ending poverty in Africa.

What: As Philadelphia Live 8 concert attendees groove to Destiny's Child and Dave Matthews Band, they will be able to join the millions of Live 8 supporters worldwide through a text messaging campaign powered by Sun Microsystems. Concert-goers will be asked to text message their name -- i.e. "john smith" -- to the code "UNITE" or 86483. They will receive a reply text message back from Sun thanking them for their support and directing them to the Live 8 Web site to sign a petition supporting objectives to end extreme poverty in Africa.

When: Saturday, July 2, 2005 12 noon ET - 8 p.m. ET

Why: On July 6, leaders of the G8 Summit will gather in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the top of their agenda is African poverty and famine, and discussing the goal of eradicating this systemic poverty through debt relief. Legendary musician and organizer of the Live Aid concerts, Bob Geldof, has teamed with U2's Bono and organized Live 8, which comprises of six concerts happening in Philadelphia, Rome, London, Paris, Berlin and Barrie (Canada) all on July 2.
