Emmis & Radio One Announce Joint Donation to Indiana Black Expo
$100,000 designated for the Rev. Charles Williams Mobile Cancer Screening Unit
INDIANAPOLIS, July 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Emmis Communications (NASDAQ:EMMS) and Radio One, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROIAK)(NASDAQ:and)(NASDAQ:ROIA) are pleased to announce the joint donation of $100,000 to the Rev. Charles Williams Prostate Cancer Unit from the Emmis/Radio One Community Fund. The Prostate Cancer Unit provides a convenient way for men to get checked for prostate cancer, among other tests and screenings. Black American men are twice as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and three times more likely to die from the illness than other American men. The stage of detection for black men is usually later than their white counterparts, thus, limiting treatment options.
In January 2001, Emmis and Radio One jointly announced a $1 million donation to support non-profit organizations that promote the Central Indiana African-American community.
"The opportunity to participate in a project that is tackling cancer head- on was presented to our companies, and frankly, we jumped at the chance to participate in such a worthy cause and in memory of a friend and respected leader in our community," Emmis Chairman and CEO Jeff Smulyan said.
"One of the goals of the Emmis/Radio One Community Fund is to make a substantial impact upon the quality of life in the Indianapolis community. This year's commitment, our most significant to date, will help improve Hoosiers' health," said Alfred C. Liggins III, Radio One's President and CEO.
"On behalf of the Indiana Black Expo, Inc. (IBE) and the family of Rev. Williams, we are grateful to Emmis and Radio One for ensuring the legacy of Rev. Williams will live on. This generous gift provides the critical initial funding for operation of the unit," said Joyce Rogers, CEO and President, Indiana Black Expo.
The Emmis/Radio One Community Fund responds to problems and issues facing the Central Indiana Community. Rather than soliciting grant applications, the philosophy of the Fund is to evaluate the needs of the community and provide timely and effective solutions to our community challenges.
