The Possible Films Collection and Netflix Join Forces for the Exclusive DVD Release of Director Hal Hartley's 'The Girl From Monday'

The Possible Films Collection and Netflix Join Forces for the Exclusive DVD Release of Director Hal Hartley's 'The Girl From Monday'

NEW YORK, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), the world's largest online movie rental service, and The Possible Films Collection, the distribution company of filmmakers Hal Hartley and Steve Hamilton, today announced a promotional agreement through which Netflix will promote and merchandize the DVD release of their project The Girl From Monday. The film made its worldwide debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005, and then screened at MoMA in New York as part of the "premieres" series celebrating the re-opening of the museum. The film had a successful theatrical release this spring in cities nationwide via The Possible Films Collection.

The Girl From Monday DVD will be available exclusively to more than three million Netflix members beginning (July 19, 2005). Netflix will utilize members' past film rating and rental histories to identify and promote The Girl From Monday to viewers with an interest in similar films.

"Through projects like The Girl From Monday, we at Netflix aim to give filmmakers a platform to promote their high quality projects, while providing a channel for powerful films to penetrate viewers' homes, lives and culture in a meaningful and measurable way," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix.

A funny and thought-provoking farce told in the rhythms of a sci-fi thriller, The Girl From Monday invites viewers to consider a world where citizens are actually proud to be stock options whose market value fluctuates depending on their sexual activity. This world is a place where sex for pure pleasure is against the law, and one's credit rating determines everything. The Girl From Monday stars Sabrina Lloyd, of the CBS series Numb3rs, as well as Bill Sage and Leo Fitzpatrick, and features the film debut of international model Tatiana Abracos.

"Hal and I have felt for a long time that, while traditional avenues of distribution are closing for alternative cinema, the internet has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for advertising and publicizing one's film," explains Steve Hamilton.

"Even though we felt The Girl From Monday had great commercial appeal, most mainstream distributors thought it was too much of an art film to warrant the high cost of theatrical release," continues Hamilton. "As an alternative means of promoting our film, we joined forces with Netflix, a company whose model and philosophy provided a much more direct link between the filmmaker and the viewer."

About The Possible Films Collection

The Girl From Monday is the newest release from The Possible Films Collection, a distribution company founded by filmmaker Hal Hartley and his long-time editor Steve Hamilton. Just this year, The Possible Films Collection has released Director Richard Sylvarnes' The Cloud of Unknowing theatrically. A quietly intense ghost movie, directed by Sylvarnes and produced by Hartley, this film follows a lonely young doctor who suspects the spirit of his dead wife has come to possess the mind of a troubled young woman in his hospital. Last fall, The Possible Films Collection also released the company's premiere DVD title: Short Works By Hal Hartley 1994-2004. This arresting collection of short work -- six previously unreleased short films and videos by Hartley -- reveals the tireless experimentation, curiosity, and playfulness that lies behind his many feature films, like The Unbelievable Truth, Simple Men, Amateur, The Book of Life, Trust, Flirt, Henry Fool, No Such Thing, and his newest feature film The Girl From Monday. The premiere DVD release also includes rare footage of Hartley's controversial play Soon, inspired by the Branch Davidian catastrophe in Waco Texas in 1993, an exclusive interview regarding it, a complete biography, and an essay by the filmmaker, as well as the never-before-seen short film The Sisters of Mercy, starring Sabrina Lloyd and Parker Posey.

Additionally, The Possible Films Collection is currently distributing The Girl From Monday soundtrack, and Possible Music -- From the Films (ETC) of Hal Hartley. This CD release features signature tunes from many of Hartley's films, composed by the filmmaker.

The Possible Films Collection is focused on limited theatrical distribution of films followed by DVD home video sales from the Possible Films Collection web site (www.possiblefilmscollection.com) and affiliated independent video outlets. Hal Hartley's own company, Possible Films Incorporated, continues to represent the worldwide rights to certain of Hartley's past features, including Flirt (1995), Henry Fool (1997), Trust [1990], and the short films Ambition (1991) and Theory of Achievement (1991).
