Grokster Case Expert and Amicus Brief Signatory for NetCoalition Available for Interviews on Supreme Court Decision on MGM v. Grokster
WASHINGTON, June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Markham Erickson, General Counsel for NetCoalition will be available today to discuss the Supreme Court's decision in the closely watched MGM v. Grokster case which will determine whether movie and music companies can sue peer-to-peer distributors for the copyright violations of their users.
NetCoalition maintains that if copyright owners are able to sue inventors of new technologies for the sins of their users, most Internet and technology companies would be vulnerable. If the Court rules in the entertainment industry's favor, e-mail service providers could be required to monitor subscriber e-mail for copyright materials, or a digital photo site might be forced to check uploaded pictures for copyright infringement. Venture capital will vanish, and technology companies would have to consult with lawyers for the entertainment industry at the R&D stage.
