Charlottesville and Kecoughtan High Schools Advance to Battle of the Brains Champions Challenge

Central and Southeast Region Winners Compete for First Championship Title

RICHMOND, Va., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Apprentice? Bah! Survivor? Yawn. Southeast and Central Virginians have found their favorite reality show much closer to home.

This Saturday, June 11th, residents will be glued to their TV's, rooting for their favorite Battle of the Brains teams as Central region champion Charlottesville High School meets Southeast region champion Kecoughtan High School at the first inter-regional Battle of the Brains Champions Challenge presented by the Virginia Lottery.

These two teams have been part of the competition featuring Virginia's brightest students in the Battle of the Brains Tournament since this past October. Saturday, the 2004-05 Champion will be crowned.

The Battle of the Brains Champions Challenge will be televised on June 11 at 9:30 a.m. on WTVR- CBS Channel 6 in the Central region and at 10:00 a.m. on WAVY- NBC Channel 10 in the Southeast region. Both stations will air their region's All-Star Finals on June 18 at those same times.

BACKGROUND: Battle of the Brains presented by the Virginia Lottery is the only televised academic quiz show for high schools in Central and Southeast Virginia. The competition draws students from over 200 schools throughout the Commonwealth. To qualify for Battle of the Brains, each team, comprised of four students, took a rigorous written test. The test scores determined each team's ranking order.

Each week from October through June, teams from two high schools compete to answer challenging questions compiled by the Battle of the Brains staff and advisory board. The winner each week proceeds to the next round of competition. The winner of each region meets in the Championship Challenge to determine the Battle of the Brains Champion. In addition, eight students from each region are chosen to compete in the All Star Championship Finals and the right to be crowned the next high school hero-Academic All Star.
