Mayor Michael Bloomberg Proclaims May 23-30, 2005 Art Deco Week

NEW YORK, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the Art Deco Society of New York (ADSNY) proudly hosts the 8th World Congress on Art Deco May 23-30, 2005, in the great city of New York. This international event was previously held Miami, Florida (1991), Perth, Australia (1993), Brighton, England (1995), Los Angeles, California (1997), Napier, New Zealand (1999), Tulsa, Oklahoma (2001) and Cape Town, South Africa (2003) under the auspices of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS).

"The Art Deco Society of New York is elated to host the 8th World Congress on Art Deco in New York," said Kathryn Hausman, President of the ADSNY. "This global event celebrating New York's grand Art Deco skyline and indomitable spirit will be a glorious event-packed celebration of Art Deco."

The Honorable Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, proclaims May 23-29, 2005 as "New York Art Deco Week." "While Art Deco may have gotten its start in Paris, it reached its architectural zenith in New York City." The Chrysler Building, the Waldorf, and the Western Union buildings are all celebrating their 75th anniversary! The Empire State building, Rockefeller Center and Radio City! They are all Art Deco.

Attendees can look forward to fun-filled and educational events such as a three-day symposium at the CUNY Graduate Center, tours of iconic Art Deco landmarks and museums, including a hot night of jazz at the famous Lenox Lounge, a beautifully restored Art Deco Harlem lounge.

Other exciting venues to visit include Manitoga, formerly the home of Russel Wright; the Mandel House, a private Art Deco mansion in Mt. Kisco; and Rye Playland, the only Art Deco amusement park in the world! Look for more exciting Art Deco and 1930's-era WPA-inspired architecture in the Bronx and nearby New Jersey.

"Art Deco is my passion -- that period evoked the cultural revolution of strength and beauty that existed between the two World Wars and continues to inspire all who have been touched by its magic," said Ms. Hausman.

Join us. Don't miss this once in a lifetime event in beautiful New York City!
