Celebrities to Lend Support for American Troops
LOS ANGELES, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrities and civic leaders are set to lend support to the men, women and families of the United States Armed Services during the 3rd Annual Radiothon for the Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX on May 13 and May 14, presented by K-EARTH 101 and KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.
Stars of the television shows West Wing, Six Feet Under, Enterprise, Joan of Arcadia and Deadwood will join K-EARTH 101 and KNX air personalities when the 36-hour Radiothon kicks off Friday morning, May 13 at 6:00 am. It will continue through 6:00 pm on Saturday, May 14, and will emanate from the stations' new state-of-the-art studios at 5670 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. K-EARTH 101 and KNX will broadcast special programming, including in-studio appearances by Johnny Grant, Fred Travalena, Connie Stevens, Antonio Villaraigosa, Luc Robataille, Freddy Cannon, Louie Anderson, as well active military personnel.
The goal of the Radiothon, which was created by K-EARTH 101 air personality Gary Bryan, is to raise funds to support operational programs at the USO Center. The Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX serves as a recreation and service area for American troops and their families on the move to and from duty stations worldwide. The center serves more than 30,000 - 35,000 troops annually and has been increasingly active due to the continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The facility is the first taste of home for many soldiers who return from battle, some with injuries.
The Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX, a non-profit organization, receives no government funding. It is totally dependent on private, tax-deductible contributions. A team of more than 115 volunteers operates the center 18 hours a day, seven days a week. More than $470,000 was raised during the first two Radiothons, enabling the facility to expand from 1,351 square feet of temporary office space to 3,600 square feet on the flight arrivals level at Los Angeles International Airport.
"The facility has become one of the finest in the world thanks to the generosity of K-EARTH 101 and KNX's listeners," said the center's executive director, retired Brigadier General Michael R. S. Teilmann. "We continue to improve the services we provide for tens of thousands of military personnel who pass through our 'safe haven' at LAX. Our goal is to uphold the USO mission of providing morale, welfare and recreation services to in-transit military personnel."
Listeners of the two stations can make secure credit card donations online at www.KEARTH101.com or www.KNX1070.com, or by sending checks made out to Bob Hope USO to P.O. Box 1776, Hollywood, CA 90078. Donations can also be made by calling 1-800-USO-8454 (1-800-876-8454) during the Radiothon hours.
