Larry Kane and John Connolly Headline AFTRA Philadelphia Meeting
PHILADELPHIA, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of AFTRA, the union of performers, broadcasters and recording artists, will gather Monday, May 9, to celebrate job opportunities and contract gains in the Philadelphia area.
The setting will be AFTRA Philadelphia Local's annual meeting 7 P.M. at the Prince Music Theater in Center City.
With the announced move of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation to Philadelphia, local singers Carla Benson and John Ingram will spotlight the 'Sound of Philadelphia' with a musical performance.
Diane Heery, of Heery Casting will detail a new 13-week MTV Network teen drama called "The Block" being shot in Philadelphia with AFTRA talent in digital format, the 'film' of the future.
Besides the prospect of more union jobs AFTRA is celebrating a major local contract victory at General Electric's NBC/10 WCAU-TV, which will strengthen AFTRA broadcasters nationally.
AFTRA National President John Connolly, a Philadelphia native and veteran TV and film actor, and Distinguished Temple Grad will deliver the keynote message at the meeting. Connolly is expected to cite an AFTRA message presented to General Electric's stockholders May 4th in which the union challenged "the move to permanently institutionalize the disparate treatment being applied to Spanish-language employees at Telemundo and the English-language employees at NBC ... in direct conflict with the basic principles of GE's newly acquired sustainability status."
KYW Newsradio newsman and AFTRA National Board member Bill Shusta will be roasted with the prestigious Bill Evans Award for service to AFTRA.
Philly AFTRA Hall of Fame winners Larry Kane and Bill Campbell will present this year's Award to broadcasting legend Tom Moran.
AFTRA -- the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, AFL-CIO -- represents 80,000 performers, broadcasters, recording artists and background singers nationally and a thousand locally. It negotiates contracts with producers and provides health insurance and pension benefits for eligible members.
