Zuma Beach Entertainment Signs Licensing Agreement With The WB Television Network
CALABASAS, Calif., April 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Zuma Beach Entertainment ("Zuma") today announced that it has signed a licensing agreement, for an undisclosed amount, that permits the use of the Academy Award Winning song "(I've had) The Time of My Life," in an ongoing program to air on The WB Television Network ("The WB"). The program is about two 24-year old women living in Brooklyn who are finding out about life and love for the first time. "Zuma welcomes the opportunity to formalize an agreement with the industry's leading supplier of programming," said Daniel P. Cannon, Chairman and CEO of Zuma Beach. "We look forward to building upon the relationship we have established with The WB."
The WB, launched by Warner Bros. Entertainment, a Time Warner Company (NYSE:TWX) on January 11, 1995, currently has national coverage reaching 92% of U.S. households. The WB is America's fifth broadcast network and is currently the fastest-growing network this season among total viewers. Paced by ground-breaking shows such as SMALLVILLE, 7TH HEAVEN, GILMORE GIRLS, EVERWOOD, JKX: THE JAMIE KENNEDY EXPERIMENT, REBA, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, ANGEL and CHARMED, The WB is a pop-culture phenomenon and has launched the careers of dozens of young stars who make up the faces of new Hollywood including Chad Michael Murray, Kristin Kreuk, Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Alexis Bledel and Gregory Smith.
The WB airs primetime programming on a six-night schedule Sunday through Friday featuring the above hit shows along with the debut seasons of "Blue Collar TV," "Jack & Bobby" and "The Starlet." With network television's lowest median age (33.3) and a core demographic of 12-34 year olds, The WB has the audience that is the hardest to reach and most desired by advertisers -- first-time buyers (just starting to build brand loyalty) and prime moviegoers. Key affiliates include Tribune Broadcasting (the network's flagship affiliate station group), Sinclair (19 stations), plus The WB 100+ Station Group (a local cable-delivered station group representing markets 100-210, which signed on September 1998).
"We continually aim to associate Zuma and its properties with companies and projects that have a proven track record and are destined to achieve broad appeal," said Donny Markowitz, President of Zuma Beach. "There is great comfort knowing that we are aligning ourselves with one of the fastest growing networks. Forging such relationships at an early stage in our business life cycle is key to our future growth and success, as we strive to become to increasingly competitive in the marketplace."
Zuma recently acquired the revenues and was assigned exclusive rights to income of the net publishing share derived from the licenses and music rights, contracts and royalties from the 1987 Academy Award winning song, "(I've had) The Time of My Life," co-written by Markowitz for the hit motion picture, "Dirty Dancing."
Dirty Dancing has just begun a world tour as a theatrical musical to sell- out crowds in Australia and is on its way to Broadway. The movie has grossed over $170 million to date, making it one of the most profitable independent films of all time. Musically, Dirty Dancing re-wrote record books in the music industry and became a phenomenon all its own, launching two different multi- platinum soundtracks. Sixteen years after its initial release and three follow-up releases, the film's soundtrack has sold over 32 million units worldwide. In recent years BMG released a newly remastered Ultimate Dirty Dancing CD and Artisan Home Entertainment released the Dirty Dancing Ultimate Edition DVD. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) ranks the soundtrack as one of the Top-Selling Albums of All-Time.
