Dolby Pro Logic II Approved for iBiquity HD Radio System
SAN FRANCISCO, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Dolby Laboratories and iBiquity Digital Corporation have approved Dolby(R) Pro Logic(R) II as an audio format for the iBiquity HD Radio(TM) system. Dolby Pro Logic II technology provides a high-quality, full surround sound experience on any two-channel service, such as stereo radio and television broadcasts.
This approval enables content encoded in Dolby Pro Logic II to be delivered over iBiquity's HD Radio system, providing a rich surround sound listening experience for consumers with Dolby Pro Logic II decoders, such as those in many car audio systems and A/V receivers.
HD Radio, iBiquity's end-to-end digital broadcasting technology, allows digital radio signals to be transmitted simultaneously with analog signals over existing AM/FM radio frequencies. Content encoded in Dolby Pro Logic II is stored, edited, and broadcast as traditional two-channel signals, and is then decoded into five-channel surround sound by the listener's Dolby Pro Logic II receiver.
"We're thrilled to bring this format to iBiquity HD Radio, and therefore to offer the millions of consumers with Dolby Pro Logic II receivers the opportunity to experience high-quality surround sound through HD Radio," said Tom Daily, Director of Marketing, Pro Audio, Dolby Laboratories.
Broadcast Electronics (NAB Booth N1802) will be demonstrating Dolby Pro Logic II's application on a full, end-to-end HD Radio broadcast chain from Broadcast Electronics' AudioVAULT(R) radio automation system to its FXi 60 HD Radio + FM exciter at the NAB2005 conference, held April 16-21 in Las Vegas. The demonstration will feature a Dolby DP563 Dolby Surround and Pro Logic II Encoder and a Dolby DP564 Multichannel Audio Decoder.
Tens of millions of Dolby Pro Logic II decoders, including those designed for home receivers and car audio systems, have been sold to date. Dolby Pro Logic II is also used extensively in the television broadcast and cable industry.
