Multi-Platinum San Diego Rock Band Switchfoot Announces The First Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am Surf Contest, A Benefit Contest/Concert For Care House Kids
A Day At The Beach For Homeless Kids To Feature Surfing Contest Capped Off With Awards Ceremony & Switchfoot Concert
The Switchfoot Bro-Am Scheduled For Saturday, May 14
NEW YORK, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Diego rock band Switchfoot (best-known for the hit singles "Meant to Live" and "Dare You To Move" and the band's multi-platinum The Beautiful Letdown album) will combine the group's twin loves of music and surfing at the Switchfoot Bro-Am, a benefit contest/concert event raising money and awareness for Care House, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving homeless teens, teens in crisis and young mothers in crisis pregnancies throughout San Diego county.
Described by the band as "More Bro Than Pro," the Switchfoot Bro-Am is scheduled to take place at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, on Saturday, May 14, from 7am to 3pm, with a private awards ceremony/Switchfoot concert, including performances by surprise special guests, taking place at the historic La Paloma Theater at 7pm that evening. One of the oldest buildings in Encinitas, La Paloma was the site of Switchfoot's first album release party nearly eight years ago.
The Switchfoot Bro-Am surfing competition will consist of 16 teams of four surfers each. The members of Switchfoot will be among the teams. Each contestant will be scored on two waves -- one ridden normal stance, the other ridden "switchfoot" -- for each heat. The winning team and the winning surfer will be announced at the awards ceremony that evening.
Attendees at the private awards ceremony will include the Bro-Am teams, Care House kids, and winners of special radio contests (details TBA).
In addition to the surfing competition, the Switchfoot Bro-Am will offer the homeless kids served by Care House an amazing day at the beach: free shoes and clothes, surfing lessons and boards, guitar lessons and guitars, and most of all, a chance to dream.
Team/financial sponsors for the Switchfoot Bro-Am include: Hurley, Jedidiah, O'Neill, Transworld Surf Magazine, Redsand, Surfer Magazine, OP, Stone Tylyer Shapes, Jet Pilot, Atticus, Arnette, Macbeth Shoes, Ambiguous, Walking On Water, Lowercase People, and Nixon Watches.
Product sponsors for the event include: Volcom, Cobian, INT Softboards, and DaKine.
"Surfing and music have occupied most of our lives," explained Jon Foreman, lead singer for Switchfoot. "These two activities have introduced us to our dreams, our friends, and most of our favorite places. The support that we've received from the music scene and the surfing community over the years has been simply amazing. So we've dreamed up a way to give back to the San Diego community that has given us so much: the Switchfoot Bro-Am.
Every penny of the proceeds will go towards Care House, an organization that serves the homeless kids in San Diego. More than anything, this is a way to give back to the kids who need it most."
Released in February 2003, The Beautiful Letdown, Switchfoot's major label debut, has gone on to achieve RIAA double platinum status, driven in part by the mega-success of the smash singles "Meant To Live" and "Dare You To Move." Since the release of The Beautiful Letdown, Switchfoot, whose transcendent live performances are legendary among the group's intensely loyal fanbase, has sold more than one million concert tickets worldwide while the group's long- form video, Live In San Diego, has been certified RIAA gold. Switchfoot is currently in the studio recording the eagerly-awaited successor to The Beautiful Letdown.
