Starr Systems Wins International Design Award; Baltimore Company Named 2004 CEDIA Award Recipient

Starr Systems Wins International Design Award; Baltimore Company Named 2004 CEDIA Award Recipient BALTIMORE, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Local fans of "MTV Cribs," the popular show that gives viewers an inside look at the homes of music, television and film stars, could get the scoop from Sean Weiner on big budget lighting, sound design and media centers like those featured on the program. Weiner, owner of Baltimore's Starr Systems Design, provides customized systems integration for residential and commercial properties. The company was recently named winner of the 2004 Best Integrated Home Award by the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA), a global trade association. Starr won the award for meeting the challenge of designing and installing an integrated system - incorporating two local media systems, whole house audio, lighting control, heating and air conditioning control, broadband Internet, security and several other electronic systems - seamlessly into a historic Guilford area home. The 18,000-square-foot home was undergoing an extensive renovation throughout the installation of the Starr system, which was budgeted at $300,000 - $400,000. "We're honored to be given this award," said Weiner. "We maintained a work crew on the job site for close to a year to manage installation in conjunction with the home renovation. To have the clients happy and impress our peers in the industry at the same time brings us great satisfaction." The home, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nabit, was built in 1927. It has extensive indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, including a formal gallery, two media rooms, an indoor pool with a retractable roof, a guesthouse, tennis court and formal gardens. The Nabits turned to Starr Systems to incorporate robust but easy-to-use technology that would not interfere with the home's design and decor. Adding new wiring for audio, video, data, telecommunications and control systems proved very challenging in the enormous stone and plaster home. Starr Systems incorporated wireless solutions wherever possible, strategically locating wireless remotes, keypads and touchpanels throughout the house. A master touchpanel in the kitchen provides complete control over all subsystems, as well as real time weather data and Internet access. The indoor pool's lighting, temperature, spa, music (including underwater speakers) and motorized roof are all simply controlled, as are outdoor lighting and music systems in the garden, and on the patio and tennis courts. Surveillance cameras provide views of the home from within, or remotely when the family is traveling. Starr was also recognized by CEDIA in 2001, when the company won a Best Special Project award for a major NFL stadium skybox project.
