Ubuntu Radio to introduce a fresh programming line-up in August

Ubuntu Radio to introduce a fresh programming line-up in August

PRETORIA, South Africa, 7 July 2014 / PRNewswire Africa / - After eight months of broadcasting, Ubuntu Radio – South Africa's first government-run, 24-hour, online radio station – is undergoing a review of its programming schedule and content based on feedback from listeners.

For the duration of the review, a decision had been taken to scale down on the station's operations, with internal volunteers from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation continuing to do their work and production daily as well as covering major events live; e.g. the State of the Nation Address on 17 June 2014 was covered live. The decision to scale down has only affected the external contributors to the station. From the beginning of August 2014, the station will launch a new programming schedule and line-up of presenters. This with a view to ensuring that Ubuntu Radio not only maintains its position as a trend-setter but also that it becomes a serious player in the broadcasting industry in general and grows from strength to strength. Whilst the majority of the station's external contributors are volunteers who don't get paid, there are some who get compensated for production related costs. Like other new initiatives, the station has experienced teething problems that have resulted in invoices not being paid on time etc. The contract with the service provider who was brought in to assist with setting up the station has since lapsed.

All of these matters are being attended to and will be a thing of the past when the station re-launches on the 1 August 2014.

The forthcoming changes will see some presenters making way for new faces and new content which is aligned to the vision of Ubuntu Radio, which is that the station becomes an authority on "telling the African story by Africans from an African perspective".

Due to South Africa's increased role and mandate in the international arena, it is important that immediate and accessible platforms are used to communicate South Africa's Foreign Policy and to promote Brand South Africa domestically and abroad.

The past 8 months have provided valuable lessons, experience and knowledge to the management team. The Station Manager Mr Golden Neswiswi and his team are working round the clock to deliver a good quality product when the station re-launches in August.
