Fun "Dress in Blue Eve" Event at Breckenridge Brewery Kicks Off Colonoscopy Awareness Effort
DENVER, Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The public and highly visible television anchors and reporters are being urged to Dress in Blue on on Friday, March 7, 2014 in support of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (March). The Denver City and County Building and the Daniels & Fisher Tower will be illuminated with blue lights in recognition of the month.
Colorectal cancer, often called colon cancer, is the second leading cancer killer among cancers that impact both men and women. Roughly 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable with early detection via screening. There are several different screening options available. Coloradans are urged to talk to their doctor to learn which screening option is best for them.
Colorectal cancer often has no symptoms in its earliest stages, so it's especially important to get screened starting at age 50. Individuals who have a family history of colorectal cancer, or colon polyps, are at an increased risk of colorectal cancer. They should talk to their doctor about getting screened before age 50.
Fortunately, getting screened for colon cancer has never been easier. Under the new health care law (the Affordable Care Act), all insurance plans cover preventive services, like colorectal cancer screenings. Screenings are also covered by Medicare and Medicaid, and if you are uninsured, no cost screening may be available.
Dress in Blue Eve is an annual fundraiser for colorectal cancer screening and research. This year's event will take place on Thursday, March 6 at Breckenridge Brewery in Denver (2220 Blake St.) from 6-9 p.m. There will be live music, food, and, of course, lots of local celebrities dressed in BLUE. The public can get tickets online and funds raised will benefit cancer prevention initiatives through the University of Colorado Cancer Center, in partnership with the Colorado Cancer Coalition Colorectal Task Force.
