All Proceeds to Benefit Sister School, École Natangué, in M'Bour
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Friday, October 11, International High School students will host the 6th annual "Songs for Senegal" concert, benefiting their sister school in M'Bour, Senegal. A K-6 school located in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods of M'Bour, École Natangué was founded by Elena Malagodi in 2007. The grandmother of a current International High School student, Malagodi had been visiting that part of Senegal for over 20 years when she noticed that M'Bour's only public school was filled to capacity. After proposing to build a school through her own fundraising, M'Bour's mayor agreed and the school's seeds were planted.

Since 2007 International High School students have raised some $50,000 toward projects at the school thanks to numerous efforts, of which "Songs for Senegal" is the most significant. In addition, the students received a $5,000 grant in 2010 from the European Council of International Schools and the Peter Ustinov Foundation to build an organic teaching garden for the school. Marie N'Daye, the school's director, envisioned the garden as a means of teaching students about organic farming and giving them the means to grow fruits and vegetables themselves.
Service learning initiatives that raise funds for communities in need are not unheard of, in U.S. high schools. What makes Project Senegal unique, however, is the students' ability to cultivate a relationship with that community and see, first-hand, how their efforts make a difference. Over the past six years, three separate groups of a dozen students have traveled to M'Bour to interact with students across kindergarten and elementary classes; to help start and volunteer in the school's organic garden; and to volunteer within the community beyond their sister school--at a nearby orphanage and at a women's cooperative.
This Friday, International High School students will play instruments, sing and dance to raise funds for École Natangué. We invite you to join them.
