TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6: GRAND OLE OPRY
Profile America -- Tuesday, December 6th. Country music and radio joined together on this date in 1927 to create one of the most successful pop culture forces in entertainment history. The occasion was the first broadcast of the "Grand Ole Opry" on WSM in Nashville, Tennessee. At the time, some of Nashville's civic leaders worried that the show's sound would project the wrong image for the city -- which, of course, long ago became the nation's capital of country music. As for the Grand Ole Opry, the program is still on the air after 84 years. Today, not only is country music one of the most enduring formats among the nation's nearly 14,500 radio stations, but it accounts for a good portion of the nearly $7 billion of physical recordings Americans buy each year.
