Sony Corporation of America to Receive Sir Charles Wheatstone Award from International 3D Society February 1, 2012
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --The International 3D Society will present Sony Corporation of America with its 2012 Sir Charles Wheatstone Award for advocacy, technology and professional education at the Society's 3rd Annual 3D Creative Arts Awards ceremony to be held at the Beverly Hills Hotel on February 1, 2012.
The Society's Creative Arts Awards annually bestow the Lumiere(TM) statuette to 3D movies, television programs, videogames, and advertising, as selected by the Society's voting membership. The Annual Creative Arts Awards will honor individuals and organizations whose contributions have advanced the stereoscopic medium.
"At the core of the Society's charter is the education and support of film makers embarking on 3D projects and to refine the skills of 3D veterans. With that in mind, Sony conceived of, and implemented, a tremendously compelling hands-on 3D program, the effects of which will be realized in films for years to come. I'm pleased to see the Board has selected Sony for this most important reward." said Jim Mainard, Chairman of International 3D Society.
"With the opening of its 3D Technology Center in March 2010, Sony put 3D production technology into the hands of professionals, educating thousands of content creators on how to get 3D production right," said Lenny Lipton, 3D Inventor and Co-Founder of the I3DS.
"It has been an honor to work with so many passionate technical and creative professionals at the 3D Technology Center. We thank the Society and its Board of Governors for their commitment to furthering this medium and for the recognition of our efforts," said Chris Cookson, President of Sony Pictures Technologies, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Chief Officer of the Sony 3D Technology Center, Sony Corporation of America.
Credited by historians with the discovery of stereoscopic 3D in 1852, Sir Charles Wheatstone was a tireless advocate for 3D and is widely credited with proving the potential of stereoscopic 3D.
"Sony's mission is to help industry professionals understand how to create effective and realistic 3D, so that they can tell amazing stories in 3D," said Cookson. "It has been our privilege to work with over 3,000 TV and film professionals who have participated in Sony 3D Tech Center classes and workshops in the last two years, all with the common goal of providing audiences the best possible 3D experiences."
