The best in West Coast jazz comes to South Florida in the form of a new Los Angeles-based organ trio comprised of the hippest of contemporary jazz musicians. Saxophonist Bob Mintzer brings together drumming icon Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Yellowjackets) and Larry Goldings, simply one of the greatest keyboard players of his generation. They plow new musical ground with original music written by the players. This band is cutting edge and fresh!
Bob Mintzer has been one of the busiest woodwind multi-instrumentalists (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, and EWI [electronic wind instrument]) for nearly four decades, starting with the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Along with his longstanding Yellowjackets gig, he has his own big band and innumerable projects. He now heads the jazz studies department at USC in Los Angeles. His history with Peter Erskine goes back 30 years to Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth band and also the notable Hudson Project. The Canyon Cove project is a new venture and features him principally on tenor and bass clarinet.
Peter Erskine has seen and done it all. He played in the orchestras of Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson; logged four years with Weather Report; played in Steps Ahead with Michael Brecker; and has appeared on more than 400 albums with a multitude of great artists, including Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Gary Burton & Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Kurt Elling, Sadao Watanabe, Eliane Elias, Mike Stern, Miroslav Vitous and Jan Garbarek. His artistry and adaptability make him one of the most important drummers of the modern era.
Larry Goldings, with his signature Hammond organ style and versatility on many keyboards, has traversed not only the wide spectrum of jazz, but also the worlds of funk, pop, and electronic/alternative music. Goldings' sound can be heard on scores of albums by artists in virtually every musical genre. Some of his more notable collaborations include tours and recordings with Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Jim Hall, Jon Hendricks, Pat Metheny, Maceo Parker, Madeleine Peyroux, John Pizzarelli, John Scofield, and James Taylor. Larry also has made 10 critically acclaimed albums under his own name.
