DETROIT, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit will honor Detroit radio legend Dick Purtan and his wife Gail at the charity's 20th annual Tribute Breakfast, September 25 at Cobo Center. Advocates for many local philanthropic organizations, the Purtans will receive the Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award at the 8 AM event.

The Edward H. McNamara Award is a prestigious honor presented to distinguished and noteworthy individuals who have significantly contributed to the community. The Purtans are longtime supporters of Children's Hospital of Michigan, of which Dick is a current Board Member, as well as the Karmanos Cancer Institute where they formed the Gail Purtan Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and the Purtan Family Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Additionally the Purtans are benefactors for the Salvation Army; Dick and his 104.3 WOMC morning show crew host an annual radiothon to benefit the charity's "Bed and Bread" program. Dick's radio work has earned him both local and national honors including the industry's top prize, "The National Association of Broadcasters MARCONI Award" as "Major Market Air Personality of the Year." The Purtans have resided in the Detroit area for more than 40 years where they raised six daughters.

Previous recipients of the Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award include UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, Judge Damon Keith, Mayor Dave Bing, Tiger's manager Sparky Anderson, Governor Jennifer Granholm and First Gentleman Dan Mulhern, and Lisa and William Clay Ford.

This year's benefit event marks the 20th anniversary of the Detroit Goodfellows Tribute Breakfast. WJR is the "voice" of the event, and portions of the breakfast will be broadcast live on the station.

Tickets for the benefit event are $150 or $1,500 for a table of 10. Revenue raised will go toward the Detroit Goodfellows' 2009 fundraising goal of $1.4 million, which will help provide 36,000 holiday gift packages containing clothing, books, candy and toys for needy children in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park.

For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Detroit Goodfellows director Sari Klok-Schneider at (586) 775-6139 or sarigoodfellows@gmail.com. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.detroitgoodfellows.org. Additional corporate sponsorships are also available.

Founded in 1914, the Detroit Goodfellows is the original and oldest Goodfellow organization and is not affiliated with any other Goodfellow group. It also sponsors an emergency dental program for children, awards scholarships through Wayne State University, provides free shoes to children in need and helps send hundreds of needy children to camp each summer.
