Pro Se Litigant Wins Motion Against Tobacco Conglomerate Djarum

LOS ANGELES, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer Brian Evans prevailed against a summary judgment motion recently filed by tobacco conglomerate PT Djarum in Los Angeles Superior Court. As the complaint alleges, Evans sued PT Djarum after a corporate event took place in Indonesia to promote the Grand Indonesia, which PT Djarum owns according to Evans and various articles in The Jakarta Post and other online news websites. The complaint by Evans claims he was not properly compensated in the manner in which had been promised. Evans was hired to provide entertainment at an event held at Hotel Mulia in 2006 in Jakarta.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied PT Djarum's Motion for Summary Judgment. When PT Djarum's attorneys appealed that ruling, the appellate court also denied the petition by the tobacco conglomerate without requiring a reply by Evans.

Evans was not represented by an attorney at the Motion for Summary Judgment hearing, and appeared via telephone from Las Vegas. He only recently retained attorney Rahul Sethi of Los Angeles. Motions to add expert witnesses late on behalf of Evans, which Djarum attorneys opposed, were also granted in Evans favor.

Trial is set for August in Los Angeles Superior Court.

PT Djarum denies having any involvement in the Grand Indonesia in court filings. Evans claims it was PT Djarum who held the corporate event in celebration of the new shopping mall.
