Celebrating Technology and Innovation in the Classroom

Ten Tri-State Area Schools selected as Chase 'Multimedia in the Classroom' Awardees

NEW YORK, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of technological innovation in the classroom, ten tri-state area schools were selected as winners of the fourth annual Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Awards at the Celebration of Teaching & Learning, a premier professional development conference sponsored by THIRTEEN and WLIW21. Today each winning school will be recognized and will receive a $1,000 cash prize from Chase, the founding sponsor of the Celebration.

The Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Awards competition celebrates the achievements of teachers who collaboratively work with their students to transform learning environments through the innovative use of technology.

"Technology touches everything we do and Chase recognizes that it is vitally important for students to be well versed to be successful in a global economy. That is why we created the Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Awards to honor those schools that are using technology creatively," said Kimberly B. Davis, president of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation. "In honoring the winners of this year's Chase Awards competition, we celebrate excellence in teaching, learning and innovation. It is our hope that the awards will inspire teachers everywhere to expand their use of technology in the classroom to promote learning and achievement."

   This year's Chase Multimedia in the Classroom winners are:    --  Pomona Middle School, Suffern, NY -- Students created an interactive       Web page complete with narrations, hyperlinks and blogs for a social       studies project on Native American Indian tribes or civilizations       found throughout the Americas.   --  Xavier High School, New York, NY -- Students created a Web site       called, "Second Sight: The Future of Visual Enhancement," which       provided an overview of the current and future state of ocular robotic       prostheses and represented a student-created potential product line of       optical enhancement devices.   --  The Theatre Arts Production Company School, MS/HS 225, Bronx, NY --       Students created a dynamic video that combined drama, comedy and math       lessons to creatively describe the history of math.   --  Denton Avenue Elementary School, New Hyde Park, NY -- Students       examined time zones and climate changes from countries all around the       world to promote greater global awareness.   --  Wyandanch Memorial High School, Wyandanch, NY -- Students and their       teachers created a video project entitled, How Technology Helps Us       Learn, which examined how digital applications benefit the way we       work, play, live and learn.   --  Marymount School, New York, NY -- Students used technology including       digital photography, iPhoto, Comic Life, and Adobe Acrobat to create a       graphic, interactive novel based on their reading of Shakespeare's       Hamlet.   --  P.S. 7K, Brooklyn, NY -- Students worked collaboratively with their       teachers to create a project using iMovie to show the history,       population growth and ecology of the Hudson River.   --  Marion Street Elementary School, Lynbrook, NY -- Teachers created a       photo story presentation to encourage children to prevent global       warming by highlighting ways to keep the Earth green.  To expand the       message, Marion Street collaborated with local high school foreign       language students to help translate the audio portion of the       presentation into Spanish, Italian and Japanese.   --  Ditmas I.S. 62, Brooklyn, NY -- Teachers and students created a video       to show how technology can be used for differentiated instruction to       teach and learn American history.   --  William McKinley I.S. 259, Brooklyn, NY -- Students used original       artwork, photography and video performances to depict the Phantom of       the Opera.

The Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Awards are a highlight of THIRTEEN's Celebration of Teaching & Learning. The two-day event will feature seminars with renowned experts, hands-on workshops, performances, an exhibition of education products and services, and presentations by Google Chairman and CEO, Eric Schmidt who will be interviewed by Charlie Rose on the future of technology; the award-winning actor, director, best-selling author and host of the new PBS production "The Human Spark," Alan Alda; and the world's most recognized autistic scholar and New York Times bestselling author, Temple Grandin. Other keynote speakers include actress and math enthusiast, Danica McKellar who will be interviewed by Dennis Van Roekel; internationally-recognized author in the development of creativity, Sir Kenneth Robinson; Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, Sr.; and the new cast of Sesame Workshop's The Electric Company, who will focus on early childhood literacy.
