Urban League Now Accepting Nominations for its Five Key Business and Community Awards

PORTSMOUTH, Va., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Urban League of Hampton Roads will hold its 19th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Dinner on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth. Awards nominations are now being accepted for the following categories:
1. Whitney M. Young Jr. Award: for an international or national company that has made significant progress diversifying its workforce at the management and non-management levels. 2. Phillip Randolph Award: for a local or regional company that has made significant progress toward diversifying its workforce at the management and non-management levels. 3. Vivian C. Mason Award: for an individual or group making significant contributions through long-term service to the region by demonstrating the highest value of citizenship in promoting inter-racial understanding and cooperation. 4. Marian Palmer Capps Award: for an individual or group who has made significant contributions to the Hampton Roads community through the promotion of educational initiatives which support inter-racial understanding and cooperation. 5. Jocelyn P. Goss Award: for a high school or college student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership through community service, academic achievement and/or excellence in the performing or creative arts.
Deadline for submissions is March 6, 2009. Winners in each category will receive an array of recognition opportunities, to include the following:
-- Feature story on the Cox 11 show Cox Connections hosted by Gary McCollum, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cox Hampton Roads -- Feature story on the WSKY show The Good Lyfe hosted by local television personality DeeDee Gee -- Year long recognition on the Urban League of Hampton Roads website -- Promotion via commercials aired on the 70 networks within the Cox Communications of Hampton Roads networks
