Law Enforcement Officer Fatalities Plummet 41 Percent During First Six Months of 2008
After an unexpected surge in 2007, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the United States plummeted 41 percent during the first six months of this year, reaching the lowest level in more than four decades. This is according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and Concerns of Police Survivors. The groups' preliminary data show 59 officers died between January 1 and June 30, 2008. The last time the mid-year total was that low was 1965, when there were 55 line-of-duty deaths. By comparison, 100 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the first six months of 2007. That was the highest six-month total since 1978.

Voters Know What They Want In a Vice President, New National Poll Says
Republicans want John McCain to pick a strong conservative to be his vice presidential running mate and Democrats want Barack Obama to pick someone with economic or military and foreign policy experience, according to a new nationwide poll conducted by Clarus Research Group. While conservatism was the favored qualification for the G-O-P vice presidential nominee, Republican voters also ranked experience dealing with the economy, administrative experience as a governor or presidential cabinet member, and experience running a business high on their list. On the Democratic side, the top ranked qualification was experience dealing with the economy, which was closely followed by military and foreign policy experience. Next for Democrats was appeal to Hillary Clinton supporters and administrative experience as a governor or big city mayor.
