Teamsters to Protest Racial Discrimination at Alabama New Era Plant
Teamsters Join with Student and Community Groups to Demand Reforms at New Era Facility in Mobile
New York Teamsters, United Students Against Sweatshops, and other community and labor groups will protest in front of New Era Cap's New York City store to demand that the baseball cap manufacturer end discrimination and worker intimidation at its Mobile, Alabama facility. New Era manufactures officially licensed caps for Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Basketball League, National Football League and collegiate teams. The caps have become part of popular culture, not only limited to sports fans, but also with mainstream hip-hop artists.
The Teamsters represent the workers at New Era's Mobile plant, where black workers with years of service have repeatedly been passed over for promotion in favor of white workers. The protesters are calling on New Era to end racist practices at the Mobile plant, to stop its systematic intimidation of pro-union workers, and to reinstate the more-than-20 Mobile workers who were fired during the recent union campaign.
