Online Qualifying Exam for the National Vocabulary Championship Begins Today at winwithwords.com

High School Students Nationwide Can Take the Online Test Now For Their Chance to Compete for $40,000 Toward College Tuition

Join Over 76,000 Students Nationwide Who Are Participating in Vocabulary Event

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- High school students have a chance to compete in GSN's 2nd annual National Vocabulary Championship (NVC). Beginning today, high school students nationwide can log on to http://www.winwithwords.com/ to take the online National Qualifying Exam. Top scorers will advance to a regional in-person exam from which the top 42 scorers will be selected to participate in the NVC Finals for a chance to win $40,000 toward college tuition. The test will be available online anytime now through November 30.

The National Vocabulary Championship is a national academic competition conceived by GSN (Game Show Network) and its educational partner for the NVC, The Princeton Review. The competition goes beyond traditional 'spelling bees' to test word definitions and overall word comprehension, while providing college-bound students with the tools necessary to effectively communicate their ideas to the world. The competition is open to all eligible U.S. high school students in grades 9-12 and 13-19 years of age who attend public, private, or charter schools or who are home schooled.

"We've seen tremendous growth of the program this year at the local level -- over 400 schools nationwide, including 76,000 students, have already signed-on to participate by taking the in-school exam," commented Dennis Gillespie, senior vice president, Distribution, GSN. "We hope to match that success on a national level by encouraging every high school student, regardless of where they live, to take the online test right now for their chance to compete for the NVC title and money toward college. There's nothing to lose, and all the power of words to gain."

Top scorers on the online exam will be invited to take an in-person regional exam at a nearby Princeton Review location. Scores will be weighed against the scores of other students who took the regional test. Forty-two students with the highest marks will join the winners of eight live NVC events held across the country as NVC finalists. This group of elite word-whizzes will receive a trip to Los Angeles, CA in March 2008 to compete in the NVC Finals for the $40,000 grand prize, which will be deposited into a '529' Higher Education Savings Plan, and the title of National Vocabulary Champion.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed the National Vocabulary Championship on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2007-2008, and the program has also been endorsed by The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS).

"I am always looking to help our young scholars find ways to reach their potential, and an extensive vocabulary allows precision of thought and expression," commented Claes Nobel, chair and founder of The National Society of High School Scholars. "The National Vocabulary Championship is to be commended for encouraging and supporting students to help them enrich their language and communication skills -- tools which can only serve to empower them for future success."
