Veteran Entertainer-Songwriter Issues Challenge to Music Industry: Lower Prices and Donate Money
Bob Haworth, formerly of the Brothers Four and Kingston Trio, drops the price on downloads of his music over 50% and challenges the music industry to follow his example; Haworth also vows that each download will include donations for worthy cause and calls on the music industry to do the same.
DENVER, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The English rock band Radiohead recently shook up the music industry by announcing it would not re-sign with a major label and would offer its CD's for download for any price a consumer was willing to pay. (Minimum price 90 cents as a handling charge.)
Now, veteran musician Bob Haworth, whose long career includes decades as a key part of The Brothers Four and The Kingston Trio, says he has been inspired by Radiohead's radical move to join what he calls "a new revolution in affordable downloads." Haworth says he is releasing the first two CD's from his album catalog to the public, asking for only $5.00 for complete CD's, with $1.00 of each download going to support research programs to find a cure for Parkinson's Disease.
Haworth says he was inspired by Radiohead's move to lower prices on music. "This sends a clear signal to consumers that we want them to enjoy our music and we are being fair in setting prices for our music. The day where you bought a CD for $15 or $20 is fading fast. I'm glad to be in the forefront of this pricing revolution."
Haworth is hoping at the same time his move to use money from music sales to support causes like Parkinson's research will catch on with the rest of the music industry. "If all musicians who have control over their recorded songs agreed to lower prices on music downloads and then took just a dollar and put it towards medical research, we could make a huge impact. If the recording industry were to follow that lead, the impact could be immense! I call on other musicians to join me in both lowering the price of music downloads and also pledging to use some of the proceeds for worthy causes."
