NomadsLand Unveils Revenue Sharing Platform for Issue Filmmakers, Citizen Journalists

WASHINGTON, October 15/PRNewswire/ --

NomadsLand.com -- the online destination for social issue films and media -- today announced its foray into citizen journalism with the addition of the NomadsLand Post (http://www.nomadsland.com/blog), the written companion to its online video service.

Described as "YouTube for smart people" and "a film festival on your PC," NomadsLand (http://www.nomadsland.com) has attracted hundreds of international filmmakers to its multilingual site by distributing films, video and documentaries that creatively explore pressing issues. Now the company is extending its revenue sharing model to independent print journalists.

"Unlike current journalism and television models, NomadsLand 'attaches' text and video advertising to individual films and articles and then pays each author half of what that film or article earns through ads or downloads...in perpetuity," says NomadsLand founder Davin Hutchins. "Filmmakers, journalists and writers are paid royalties months or years after their article or film is first published ... as long as it is still attracting traffic. We're a social enterprise and believe profits as a means to higher ends can only be a good thing."

NomadsLand's platform allows any filmmaker or journalist to upload works that address vital issues in a creative way. A "distributed work force of nomads" curates the site so visitors don't waste time sifting through user-generated rubbish.

"Whether it's illegal immigration, the Iraq war, the crisis in Darfur or the tragedy of Tibet, NomadsLand showcases under-distributed films by providing new avenues for global filmmakers, amplifying their unique voices," says Hutchins. "Many dedicated filmmakers and journalists wish to reach new audiences over the Internet and get paid for good works but don't want to see their passion projects next to pirated TV shows or cats flushing toilets. So we created a unique home for them."

Many of the socially conscious films featured on NomadsLand have debuted at prominent film festivals, including International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, Tribeca Film Festival, AFI Fest, Bangkok International Film Festival, HotDocs and the OneWorld Human Rights Film Festival. To date, NomadsLand has logged tens of thousands of paid downloads and video streams.

NomadsLand partners with individual directors and filmmaker-friendly distributors. Filmmakers and writers who register on the site can network with an expanding international database of filmmakers, journalists and video professionals to find partners to collaborate with.

NomadsLand advertisers include American Express, Hugo, Verizon, Yahoo!, Showtime and World Vision. NomadsLand's current allies include Witness.org, Channel 4's FourDocs, Busboys and Poets, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and Docs in Progress.
