HD Radio Manufacturing Capacity Doubled Since 2006
Increased demand spurs growth
New modules and reference designs to support advanced features are available
HONG KONG, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Hong Kong Electronics Fair -- iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio technology, announced today that demand for HD Radio receivers has resulted in a doubling of partner manufacturing capacity in Asia during the past year. Nearly 60 companies are licensed and certified to manufacture HD Radio modules, components, receivers and tuners.
"We have a dedicated presence in Asia and are committed to working with our partners to ensure that they can meet the growing market demands for HD Radio products. With our rapidly growing base of partners, it is essential that we work closely with them to ensure that HD Radio products are produced to the highest standards possible," said Jeff Jury, COO, iBiquity Digital Corporation.
In addition, new modules and reference designs were introduced to enhance HD Radio receiver production with advanced features:
-- iBiquity is offering a comprehensive Reference Kit to support receiver/iPod docking products with iTunes Tagging for HD Radio technology; -- LG Innotek is offering an HD Radio module that supports Conditional Access, Store & Replay as well as iTunes Tagging capabilities; and, -- Samsung EM is offering a new module (the 2023 slave mode HD Radio module) that offers a quick path to market for end-product manufacturers.
The HD Radio system is the only digital broadcast technology approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for AM and FM radio in the United States. HD Radio broadcasts are available to more than 80 percent of the American population. More than 3,000 radio stations in the US have committed to upgrading and more than 1500 are currently broadcasting with HD Radio technology. In addition, more than 700 FM stations are offering new "multicast" channels made possible by this digital technology, which also upgrades AM/FM radio stations to offer crystal-clear sound as well as text and data services.
iTunes Tagging for HD Radio technology, the system's newest feature, enables consumers using HD Radio receivers equipped with a special Tag button to "tag" songs that they hear on the FM dial for subsequent purchase on-line through iTunes. Six leading broadcast groups (CBS RADIO, Clear Channel, Cumulus, Cox, Entercom and Greater Media), which represent thousand of local AM/FM stations, are in the process of installing iTunes Tagging technology at the local station level.
