Nelly Furtado's LOOSE is Phenomenon for Biggest Selling Female Recording Artist
Furtado Makes Directorial Debut With Video for 'Do It' Single
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Global sales of Nelly Furtado's third album, LOOSE, have passed 6.1 million and counting. No other female recording artist has achieved this level of sales during the past year, according to Universal Music Group.
Additionally, LOOSE has racked up 7.4 million digital singles sales worldwide and 4.4 million in ringtones
This week LOOSE will celebrate it's 60th continuous week on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart, where it debuted at #1 after being released June 20, 2006. The album also recently returned to #1 for the second time on Billboard's European Top 100 Album chart where it is currently at #2.
LOOSE has been certified gold in 31 countries and platinum in 23 countries worldwide.
Furtado has been nominated for Female Artist of the Year honors at MTV's Video Music Awards, airing live on September 9 from Las Vegas.
She is also nominated for the Teen Choice Award of Choice Music: Female Artist. Plus, she is included in Choice Music: Single nomination for "Give It To Me," by Timbaland featuring Nelly and Justin Timberlake. Teen Choice airs live on Fox Network Sunday August 26.
Nelly is certainly a self-sufficient recording artist. She can not only write the songs, record and perform them, but now she can successfully direct the supporting video as well.
Nelly Furtado took her first turn in the director's chair with a sassy video for her new single "Do It." MTV added the video directly into The Big Ten, the channel's heavy rotation category. "Do It" also enjoyed a TRL World Premier during Backstage Pass Week the beginning of August, with Nelly calling into the show via webcam from Portugal.
The "Do It" video was inspired by Nelly's "2007 Get Loose World Tour" and was filmed in Detroit during the USA leg. Her directorial debut featured her posse on the tour, from dancers to bus driver, tour manager to musicians. They utilized hotel rooms at hand and favorite stage gear such as glamorous green ostrich feather fans. Tour video documentarian Aaron A. was co-director and filmed the video.
"Nelly Furtado has secured her place as a signature artist at top 40 with a legacy of hits from LOOSE. ... 'Do It' again demonstrates Furtado's striking versatility, with breezy up-tempo rhythmic instrumentation alongside a sensual lyric. Chalk up another top five," Billboard magazine predicted.
Quickly embraced by major Top 40 radio stations, "Do It" is the fifth single off LOOSE. Previous singles were the Grammy-nominated "Promiscuous," "Maneater," "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come To An End)" -- all of which scored at least one #1 position on a Billboard chart.
The radio version of "Do It" includes Missy Elliott in a midsection breakdown. (Nelly was featured on the remix to Elliott's 2001 hit record, "Get UR Freak On."
Plans are being firmed up for a fall re-release of LOOSE. The re-issue will contain bonus material such as Nelly's cover of Gnarls Barkley's 2006 hit "Crazy," plus "In God's Hands," "All Good Things (Come To An End)," and "Try" from Nelly's sophomore album, FOLKLORE, sung in Spanish.
