Crested Butte Music Festival Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Classical Music, Opera, Jazz, Bluegrass, Dance, and Chinese Erhu

Explore the Elements of Paradise, July 4, 2007 to August 4, 2007

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Crested Butte Music Festival, celebrating its 10th anniversary season, presents an innovative program of music and dance from July 4th to August 4th, 2007. Located in the Victorian town of Crested Butte, designated a National Historic District, the music festival offers four full weeks of chamber and orchestral music, opera, a little bit of jazz, bluegrass, and dance, and the 10,000-ft debut of the erhu, a Chinese two-stringed fiddle.

"For this season's festival, we want music to be a catalyst for exploring the elements in paradise," said Alexander Scheirle, Artistic Director. "We have chamber and orchestral selections written by composers inspired by the four elements, 'earth, water, fire, and air,' and an entire summer program that's closely connected to experiencing paradise."

The Crested Butte Music Festival welcomes new conductor, David Stern -- son of violinist Isaac Stern -- and kicks off its classical series on July 8th with "Have a Beer with Beethoven" and the performance of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, "Eroica." Chamber music will feature works by Mendelssohn, Reinecke, and Schubert. Opera this season will include staged productions of I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo and Gianni Schicchi by Puccini. The Repertory Dance Theatre from Salt Lake City returns for three performances, and New York City-based jazz pianist Uri Caine will solo with the orchestra and perform his own arrangement of "Handel Variations" by Brahms.

The most creative and unique feature of this summer's festival is the debut of the world's best erhu player, Ma Xiaohui, who, together with YoYo Ma, played on the soundtrack for the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Ma Xiaohui and Alexander Scheirle will be the featured soloists at a home soiree on July 19th. The young people's concert on July 21st -- part of a Saturday morning education series for families -- will also feature the erhu and focus on discovering Chinese music.

The Crested Butte Music Festival performances take place in a variety of intimate venues. From the Center for the Arts to the Ein & Lynch Barn, from the Union Congregational Church to home soirees, audiences are treated to a 360-degree experience of being in paradise.
