Von Zerneck-Sertner Films: Halifax Pictures #7, Inc. Selects Guidance Software for Upcoming CBS Movie 'Hunt for the BTK Killer'

CEO John Colbert Serves as Technical Advisor on Film, Airing October 9th

PASADENA, Calif., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Von Zerneck-Sertner Films: Halifax Pictures #7 Inc. is portraying the digital investigation that put BTK behind bars for life by drawing from Guidance Software's forensic experts. "Hunt for the BTK Killer" (CBS - Oct. 9) will feature Guidance's EnCase(R) Forensic software, the use of which led to a crucial break in the case and led investigators to BTK serial killer Dennis Rader.

Guidance CEO John Colbert, who has 14 years of law enforcement experience, served as a strategic technical advisor for the production. Colbert helped producers properly portray how Encase, widely recognized as the gold standard in computer investigations and employed by 90 percent of law enforcement agencies, was utilized during the investigation.

"Guidance Software's involvement in the production of the BTK telepic insures the accuracy of the facts and details that went into bringing Dennis Rader to justice," said John Colbert, CEO of Guidance Software. "Viewers will clearly see how detectives utilized cyberforensics and how integral it was to bringing down a gruesome killer."

Wichita police and FBI investigators used EnCase to explore a floppy disk that BTK sent to a Kansas television station, which uncovered the words "Dennis," "Park City Library," and "Christ Lutheran Church." These words quickly led authorities to capture and arrest Dennis Rader.

In "Hunt for the BTK Killer," Robert Forster and Michael Michele will portray the Wichita investigators who pursued BTK. Gregg Henry plays Rader, who on August 18, 2005 was sentenced to 10 consecutive life terms. Rader was arrested in February and pleaded guilty in June to 10 murders committed from 1974 to 1991. A former church congregation president and Boy Scout leader, he led a double life in which he called himself BTK for "bind, torture and kill."

As a special thanks and recognition to Kansas law enforcement for putting BTK away, Guidance Software is donating their complete EnCase Cybercrime Arsenal, including training, hardware, software and support for three years to the Riley County Police Department (RCPD). Arsenal represents the latest technological developments, and is the most complete solution for law enforcement agencies to help combat cybercrime.

Mike Watson, a 30-year police veteran and the RCPD's director, served with the Wichita Police Department for 24 years, including Chief of Police from 1995-2000. Chief Watson and the RCPD were nominated to receive the EnCase Arsenal by Wichita Police Department investigators and current Chief of Police Norman Williams, who along with Kenny Landwehr and the current men and women of the Wichita Police Department brought Rader to justice. Arsenal will allow the RCPD to conduct sophisticated computer forensic examinations that had previously been limited to larger departments.
