Number of Babies Born Prematurely Nears Historic Half Million Mark in U.S.
A government report says nearly a half million American babies were born prematurely in a single year, putting them at increased risk for death and disability.
The National Center for Health Statistics says 12 percent of all babies -- 499-thousand infants -- were born prematurely in 2003. That's up slightly from 2002 -- and an increase of more than 30 percent since the government began tracking premature births in 1981. The pre-maturity rate was nine- point-four percent in 1981; it has increased every year since then except for slight dips in 1992 and 2000.

A Harris Poll finds firemen, doctors, scientists, nurses and teachers are all seen as prestigious occupations by U-S adults while union leaders, journalists, accountants, real estate agents and stockbrokers are all seen at the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to having prestigious occupations.
Four occupations are perceived to have "very great" prestige by at least half of all adults -- firemen, scientists, doctors, and nurses. They are followed by three professions that are perceived to have "very great" prestige by 40 percent or more but less than 50 percent -- military officers, teachers, and police officers.
By way of contrast, the list includes ten occupations that are perceived by less than 20 percent of adults to have "very great" prestige, with two of these under ten percent. The lowest ratings go to stockbrokers, real estate brokers, accountants, journalists, union leaders, bankers, business executives, actors, entertainers and lawyers.
