Anytown's World Premiere 10/4 at Annenberg Sets Dance to Springsteen's Music, Provides Free Prostate Cancer Testing
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The music of American icon Bruce Springsteen provides the inspiration for an innovative new dance musical, "Anytown," while promoting prostate cancer awareness. The work, commissioned in part by Dance Affiliates with a generous grant from the Strauss Foundation of Bryn Mawr, runs October 4-8 at the Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut Street, as part of the Dance Celebration series. From October 4-8, cards will be given to any man who comes into the Annenberg lobby - no ticket purchase necessary - for a free PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test at Einstein Medical Center or HUP.
Exploring universal themes of family, love and survival, "Anytown" is part of the ambitious "PSA in the USA" campaign to educate men that prostate cancer is nearly 100% curable if detected early, and provide free PSA testing for one million men. The dance is choreographed not only to the music of quintessential guy's guy Springsteen, but also to the compositions of Patti Scialfa (who is married to Springsteen) and their collaborator Soozie Tyrell (Scialfa's best friend). After Philadelphia, "Anytown" embarks on a three- year, 60-city tour.
"Anytown" was created by Danial Shapiro and his wife Joanie Smith, co- artistic directors of Shapiro & Smith Dance of Minneapolis. Shapiro has been battling prostate cancer since the beginning of the project. Diagnosed in 2002 at 44, he says, "My diagnosis forced Joanie and me to focus on the priorities of getting well, but also guided our hand to the work we felt compelled to do. At the heart of 'Anytown' is the importance of family. Dancing to Soozie, Bruce and Patti's music makes 'Anytown' the thrill of a lifetime." Adds Smith, "Getting out of bed and going back into the studio has given extra purpose to our waking moments and shown us that our strength as artists has helped us in this fight for our lives."
All proceeds from the October 4 premiere will benefit the University of Pennsylvania's Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute headed by John Glick, M.D., and the work of Alan J. Wein, M.D., Chair of Urology, HUP. Tickets to the October 4 premiere are $100 per person; ticket information is available by calling Emily Smith at 610-352-5559.
