Bayview Yacht Club Welcomes News/Talk 760 WJR as Official Media Partner for the Historic 2005 Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race
DETROIT, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayview Yacht Club announced today that Detroit based News/Talk 760 WJR will be the official media partner for the 81st consecutive Bayview Mackinac Race, which starts on Saturday, July 23. Bayview and WJR will provide complete and continuous coverage of the race, beginning Friday, July 22 through Monday, July 25. Broadcast reports will cover the pre-race events from Port Huron and then follow the progress of the race from start to finish. Bayview and WJR also will provide updated results and other information on their websites: http://www.byc.com/mack05 and http://wjr.com/ .
The Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race is one of the world's longest and most famous freshwater sailing races with over 3,000 sailors sailing nearly 300 boats on one of two courses, both starting in lower Lake Huron and finishing at historic Mackinac Island. The Southampton Course (253 nautical miles) takes the boats around a special race buoy off Southampton, Ontario, before they head for the Island finish. The shorter Shore Course (204 nautical miles) follows the Michigan coastline all the way.
Now, with WJR's extensive coverage, the vast WJR listening audience will be able to hear first-hand about the race, its sailors, history and compelling story, thanks to this extraordinary partnership between two historic organizations: 90-year old Bayview Yacht Club and 83 year old News/Talk 760 WJR.
WJR has been hosting a broadcast series of "Mackinac Race Minutes" during the three weeks prior to the race. These vignettes capture the lore of the race, its history and the memories of some of the men and women who have made the historic trek up Lake Huron to Mackinac Island since 1925.
"We are so pleased to be a part of this tremendous event and outstanding sailing tradition," said Mike Fezzey, WJR President & General Manager. "We look forward to being the official 'Voice of Sailing' for the greatest race to take place on the Great Lakes."
Weekend coverage of the "Great Race on the Great Voice of the Great Lakes" begins Friday, July 22, with Paul W. Smith broadcasting from 6 to 9 a.m., followed by Warren Pierce on Saturday, July 23 from 5 to 9 a.m., both live from Port Huron. In addition, stay tuned to WJR for reports from the Black River in Port Huron, from the starting line in Lake Huron and from Race Headquarters on Mackinac Island during the top-of-the-hour newscasts at 6 a.m., 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday, July 22 through Monday, July 25.
