Post-News Charities Awards More Than $450,000 in Charitable Grants
DENVER, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Post-News Charities, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, today awarded over $450,000 to five metro-Denver nonprofit agencies that positively impact children, youth and literacy.
Agencies receiving Post-News Charities grants are Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Denver SCORES, Junior Achievement and National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
Throughout the year, Post-News Charities raises money through special events and event partnerships with local nonprofit agencies. All funds raised, as well as matching funds from the McCormick Tribune Foundation, are given to charitable organizations in the metro-Denver area through a grant process. In 2004, more than $1.2 million was distributed.
"These are outstanding organizations doing great work in our community," said Tracy Ulmer, director of promotion and community relations for the Denver Newspaper Agency, who distributed the grant checks during a luncheon. "We are proud to be able to provide such significant funding to these meaningful programs."
Following are brief descriptions of the organizations and programs being supported by the Post-News Charities grants:
The Denver Center for the Performing Arts serves the entire Rocky Mountain region and is dedicated to excellence in the arts. This grant will fund Art in Education programs that are designed to provide children with engaging, educational, quality arts experiences throughout their school years.
Founded in 1899 to provide care for indigent tuberculosis patients, National Jewish Medical and Research Center is the only medical center in the country focusing solely on allergic, respiratory and immune disorders. They received a grant to fund their unique pediatric programs that provide comprehensive care and disease-management for thousands of children.
Cleo Parker Robinson Dance is a Denver-based professional multi-cultural dance arts institution dedicated to providing cross-cultural dance arts experiences. This agency received a grant to support their youth programs including AYE Project and Season of Schools.
The mission of Denver SCORES is to inspire in urban children a lifetime commitment to education, healthy living and civic responsibility. This grant will help fund their mission by engaging children in Literacy In Action, a daily after-school program linking soccer, literacy and service learning activities in the north and west Denver Public Schools.
Junior Achievement has been reaching out to low-income school district to teach children through literacy-reinforced activities since 1919. They received a grant to support JA Ourselves, a unique program for kindergarten students that is designed to enhance literacy and develop personal economic concepts.
The mission of the Denver Newspaper Agency's community relations division -- Post-News Community -- is to improve the quality of life through support of programs that benefit children, arts and culture, education and literacy, and the provision of basic human services. Post-News Community accomplishes this through the implementation of various community-giving programs including Post-News Charities and Post-News Season To Share, funds of the McCormick Tribune Foundation; sponsorships by The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, and the DNA ACTS (Denver Newspaper Agency Assisting the Community Through Service) employee volunteer program.
